As we close out #NationalEngineersWeek, our final spotlight is on #OHLAUSA's engineer Jake Woxland, who serves as Assistant Project Manager at our I-5 North Capacity Enhancements project in Santa Clarita, CA. Jake shares with us the importance of collaboration and communication with subcontractors, utilities, and public agencies, which is essential to successful project execution. "Recently at our I-5 project, we came across the challenge of widening a bridge with many obstacles in the way including existing street lighting, concrete channels, and oil lines. This has all been made even more difficult due to the limited space and the bridge's height (over 65’ above the street). To get by the restrictions imposed by all parties, we had to implement a collaborative effort across all fields. This includes multiple meetings and discussions with various parties including our owner LACMTA, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the oil line company, our falsework design team, the County of Los Angeles, and the local electrical utility company." Jake explains that by working together to create solutions to these conflicts, which led to making various design changes, the team was able to coordinate a viable plan. "The revisions allowed OHLA USA to complete the construction of the bridge, despite the limitations, which is a positive milestone for the project." #engineer #engineeringchallenges #engineeringforabetterworld #civilengineering #construction #heavycivil #peoplebuilders #weareOHLA #webuildexcellence

Embarking on a construction journey is like setting sail on vast, uncharted waters. It requires not just vision and courage but a detailed map and the right permits in hand. Securing the proper permits and establishing building timelines far in advance isn't just bureaucratic hoop-jumping; it's the cornerstone of a successful, smooth-sailing project. These early steps ensure that every aspect of the build — from safety to sustainability, from design to delivery — aligns with both local regulations and global standards. 🏗️📜🕒 With permits secured and timelines carefully plotted, we can navigate around potential obstacles, ensuring that our project not only meets but exceeds expectations. This proactive approach allows for the seamless integration of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, laying the groundwork for structures that stand the test of time. It's about building with intention, respect for our communities, and a commitment to excellence. So, as we lay the foundations of tomorrow's landmarks, let's celebrate the meticulous planning that makes it all possible. Here's to the unsung heroes of the construction world: the planners, the permit officers, and every visionary mind that understands the value of preparation. Together, we build not just buildings, but futures. 🌟🏛️🌍 #BuildingTheFuture #ConstructionPermits #PlanningAhead #TimelineMastery #PermitPower #ProjectPreparation #BuildingCodes #SustainableConstruction #EngineeringExcellence #CommunityBuilding

Prime Minister, Dr Robert Abela, to offer the technical assistance of the Chamber of Engineers, and the expertise of its members, towards the implementation of the recommendations laid out by the Inquiry Board led by Judge Emeritus Joseph Zammit McKeon. The Chamber is satisfied to remark that the Interministerial Committee has acknowledged the Chamber’s offer and meetings will be held where we will ensure that the advice of the engineering profession leads to a safer future. The Chamber also notes with satisfaction that the Government has taken on board its proposal to have Inġiniera join Periti and Lawyers as part of the panel which will be providing professional assistance to third parties affected by construction projects. The Chamber calls interested members with experience in the sector to reach out and contribute to this reform. Furthermore, the Chamber appeals for the necessary political will and bold decision-making which will restore the sector’s credibility and give people the peace of mind that a tragedy, such as the death of young Jean Paul Sofia, never repeats itself. Lets talk site visits and site meetings for road design engineers, Site visits play a crucial role in road design and construction, and they are an integral part of the road design engineer's responsibilities. Site visits help to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the scope, purpose, and constraints of the road. Here's an overview of site visits in the context of road construction: 🎯 Preliminary assessment of the existing site conditions, 🎯 Assess the existing infrastructure constraints and gaps 🎯 The different topographic features, 🎯 Assessment of the soil conditions 🎯 Assessment of drainage systems 🎯 Identify environmental factors that may impact road design. 🎯 Existing infrastructure and utilities, and how they will be affected 🎯 Assess general traffic constraints and needs 🎯 Assess which design principles will be applied 🎯 Assess local regulations and standards. 🎯 Asses Road-user needs 🎯 Identify and engage with stakeholders, Prior to carrying out your site visit you will have undertaken your site analysis desktop study. It is important you go to site prepared, so make sure you check out the next post before you continue to go to site. Let me know a few things that you consider before going to site in the comment section. #highwaydesign #civilengineering #sitevisits

Understanding the role of R&D in the construction industry. Research and Development (R&D) within the construction industry encompasses the pursuit of innovation, knowledge, and technological advancements to enhance building processes, materials, and structural designs. This takes place in all parts of construction including commercial, residential, retrofitting, and building new. R&D initiatives in construction aim to address challenges such as reducing environmental impact, enhancing structural integrity, streamlining processes, and creating more cost-effective and durable infrastructure. It involves investigating and implementing new approaches, materials, and systems that push the boundaries of conventional construction methods, seeking to introduce novel solutions that lead to better, safer, and more sustainable built environments. R&D activities solve industry challenges by fostering innovation and developing new solutions that tackle technical uncertainties, pushing the boundaries of conventional methods to enhance efficiency, productivity, and sustainability. R&D is about seeking technological advances, which involve overcoming obstacles and resolving uncertainty. This could be applicable to construction or engineering projects, but there is no type or version of R&D in construction. R&D in the construction industry could relate to the innovative use of materials or overcoming problems on site. Often on construction sites there are unique circumstances in which only a bespoke solution will meet stringent performance standards or legislative requirements.
