Ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week where we will hear about removing the stigma and seeking help for our ‘mental’ health. I want to shift the conversation to emotions, oppression and trauma. Oppression is not in your head. For some it’s a great big capital O for others it’s multiple little o’s. The same with trauma. Big T little t. One massive catastrophic event, or multiple events & experiences, layer upon layer. How we respond, are supported, believed or disbelieved (in many cases) will impact how we think, feel and whether we can move forward. I don’t like ‘recover’ or worse ‘get over’. Neither are in your head, responding through behaviour & feelings is RATIONAL. In this episode I speak to Debs Teale about her lived experience of domestic abuse both as a child and as an adult, and then as a service user of the mental health system. Followed by a shocking discovery post separation. Deb’s had an awakening some years later and has used her learning, art & support from professionals to gradually come off her medication and is now successfully living medication free. Debs now uses her expertise to train mental health professionals and social workers, she is happily married now & has won many awards for her work. This GoodEnoughChats clip shows Alan Sowersby using the phrase, "Vulnerability is a superpower," provoking an immediate response from cynical old me, before he explains calmly and effectively why it resonates with him. What a great way to convey the feeling of relief he's realised by opening up about his mental health. And that's why I want to keep putting more of these discussions out there. Yes, it's #MentalHealthAwareness week. But mental health needs to be focused on for the other 51 weeks of the year too. Yes, there is plenty of corporate posturing going on about it. But despite the cynical piggybacking, the fact remains that more has to be done to destigmatise men's mental health. Just watch any episode of GoodEnoughChats, and the one thing that is consistent across the board is that every guest says a version of the same thing: Opening up to someone - be that a partner, friend, family member, colleague, a medical or mental health professional - was the critical first step to them being able to take positive action. So, here's to doing more to show people the benefits of opening up. I'm looking for blokes to share their lived experiences of mental health in future episodes of the show. We've got five live already, three more about to be recorded, and a shortlist of prospective guests that I want to lengthen with more men who've been through it and learned useful stuff about themselves along the way.
