While there are numerous ways to increase non-dues revenue a few of my go-to methods include: - Selling branded merchandise - Hosting annual conferences (which may even attract corporate sponsors) - Selling ad space in your email newsletter, on your website, or your social media pages - Hosting a fundraising event - Organizing a silent auction (make sure bets can be places online as well!) We believe in the power of bringing people together to share ideas. Our Mill Street Nights program creates an informal space for collaboration under Mill Street Rules, where discussions lead to collective actions. The dialogue is shaped by a provocation, and we were privileged to have Professor Paul Corrigan contribute insights on the challenges and solutions to successful neighbourhood working. The inaugural Mill Street Nights was led by Chair and PPL Senior Advisor nigel Edwards with our focus on the theme: "Why Integrated Neighbourhood Teams will fail and what we can do to prevent that." Breaking away from the traditional round-table approach, the discussion prioritised actions over minutes, fostering a thought-provoking conversation among participants. What set this evening apart was the freedom to engage in a 'different kind of conversation'- an informal space for lively debates, new connections, and fresh perspectives. As we kick off 2024, client engagement and key discussions with public and private sector stakeholders is more important than ever before. The RPS City Planning team are developing and have put in place a series of events in the diary which includes a rich mix of our talent across all tiers of the team playing a role. In the immediacy, we have some key engagements pencilled including: - a joint roundtable discussion in partnership with Nick Kilby MCIPR and his team at Cratus Group to hear from John Cotton , Leader of Birmingham City Council. This will be an opportunity to get a sense of how our clients can engage in development at a time when the City council is navigating its financial challenges. I am delighted Alex Clarke our graduate planner will be presenting his briefing note on his assessment of housing, planning and development across the City to the Leader and our clients. - on the back of the latest planning reforms with the #nppf updates and wider planning reforms, we will be discussing with senior housing leaders what this translates to in practice with Lee Rowley, Minister for Housing and Planning. Our very own principal planner, Toby Huntingford will present his assessment on the reforms to kick start the discussion. Later this week, David Sleath, CEO of SEGRO will pay a visit to our offices to sit on the hot seat at our Meet the Chief’s session which our graduate planner Eleanor Leach will chair and host the event with our apprentices to Assoc Directors in attendance. I am also very grateful to Lisa Fairmaner from the Mayor of London’s office who will also join us to share her career path inc. telling us all things London Plan - our planning apprentice Louis Pender is prepping to ask those difficult questions! Other events in the pipeline in the coming months include deep dive client discussions with Dr Martin Reeves, CEO at Oxfordshire County Council, a borough leader’s investment opportunities review with Anthony Okereke at London borough of Greenwich and much more is in the pipeline. We are getting excited in developing RPS’s engagement, in collaboration with our parent company Tetra Tech Europe to play a part in their pavilion at the flagship calendar event UKREiiF. This will include an informal curry night with our clients and stakeholders attending the event with guest speaker Melanie Leech , CEO at the British Property Federation. We truly value the importance of helping our clients engage with key industry stakeholders at all tiers of government and we are proud of enriching our future talent by them being at the heart of these discussions. My journey as an Enterprise Adviser continues... Last Thursday I had the pleasure of joining the Hampshire Hub Cluster meeting in Basingstoke. This session brought together schools’ and colleges’ careers leads, governors, enterprise advisers and Hampshire County Council’s Enterprise and Growth Team for updates, networking and collaboration. It was very clear that these professionals and volunteers were totally dedicated to one thing: providing the best possible career information and opportunities for their students. Key topics included the Gatsby Benchmarks, Labour Market Intelligence, Local Skills Improvement Plans and work experience opportunities. All familiar stuff for those of you involved in CIMSPA’s Professional Development Committees or the wider discussions around workforce. I was there for two reasons. First, to understand what schools and colleges really need from employers and sector representatives.  It seems that schools and colleges are still struggling to engage with local employers. Everyone Active - SLM Places Leisure GLL Serco SCL Education Group and others – expect to hear from me! Second, I have sat in too many meetings discussing the skills shortage in the sport and physical activity sector where everyone looks at everyone else while wringing their hands. It's now time to do something about it. As a sector we should be doing much more careers work with schools and colleges. I’d like to see at least 100 enterprise advisors from the sport and physical activity sector by the end of 2025. Who wants to join me? Aggghhh to be nominated for the Resident and Training Award at the Affordable Housing Awards last Friday! This nomination holds special significance for several reasons. It highlights the power of collaboration and the positive impact we make in the community, especially on the lives of residents, when working alongside dedicated partners like Pinnacle Group Limited. Over the years, Pinnacle's unwavering commitment to infusing more social value into communities has resulted in the employment of over 100 residents, alongside MTVH's other supply chain partner, CLEANSCAPES LIMITED. It's important to note that these jobs were secured exclusively through social value initiatives, translating into meaningful, tangible, and impactful social value. While we didn't secure the trophy on Friday, the true winners are undoubtedly the residents. Reflecting on the loss, I couldn't help but recognise the positive outcomes we've achieved. All the employment opportunities created come with a commitment to paying the London Living Wage or the Real Living Wage outside of London. This equates to an annual salary payout of £2.4 million to these residents, underscoring the real-world impact of our collective efforts. Nominations like these are a testament to our shared commitment to making a difference, and the real victory lies in the transformative effect on the lives of those within our communities. The Care Leaver Covenant held our seventh Business Council meeting this week. The Council is made up of senior leaders from the private and public sector incl. Amazon , Mace , NHS and many others. Todd Lockley gave a brilliant presentation about an inclusive employment programme Marston's PLC have masterminded for this coming year. We always have at least one young person present at our Council meetings so that there can be knowledge exchanged between aspirational young care leavers and senior business leaders. Sebastian-Nico Scott, who attended this week, finished his presentation by asking our Council members whether they wanted to be part of improving the world or part of making it worse... With new EDI/DEI/social impact/social value rankings springing up all the time, as well as changing legislation, changing culture, debates about DEI Vs. ROI, is there a more fundamental question than this for the biggest employers in our country? #diversityandinclusion #socialimpact #responsiblebusiness
