Hire people who are smarter than you. When I worked on Wall Street, my boss wanted me to hire somebody. We found this guy, a PhD in physics. Since I was not very senior to him, I felt intimidated and hesitant to hire him. I did anyway, and it turned out to be one of the smartest moves I ever made. I learned not to be afraid of having people work for you who are smarter than you. They make you better, they make the whole thing better. It's a mistake for your own career if you neglect to hire someone because they are smarter or better than you in some way. We ended up making a great team, saw eye to eye, and worked very well together. I could pick up what he was doing, and he could pick up what I was doing. In terms of output, these were some of my most productive years. And as a team, we developed some really good ideas and produced some great work. I was, and still am, very proud of the work we did. Contrast Studio is almost 1 year old. It’s a productized design service. The more I work with this model the more I realize it’s better for early-stage companies than hiring. Besides being cheaper, it helps maintain focus. Here’s why. With full-time employees, startups often don’t have enough work to fill their capacity week after week for an entire year. That’s money lost for the company and managers feel pressured to fill in the gaps with BS work (vision projects, explorations, pointless iterations, projects that won’t be developed for months, etc.) That’s just treading water. That drains designers of creative energy. Why not just pause work? With a full-time hire, they’re locked in. It’s all or nothing. 100mph or 0. That doesn’t make sense. With a productized service clients know they are buying outcomes, not time. They understand my time is limited and valuable. That pushes them to focus only on what matters and frees up my time to help other clients with impactful projects instead of pretending to work. PS: don’t get me started on how much time wasting goes on in big companies… so much money wasted. #productivity

Who has it better, children or adults? Is it better to be a child or an adult? Adults routinely say children have it better, because they have little or no responsibility. When you ask kids, however, you get the opposite answer. Kids say adults have it better, and for the same reason, responsibility. I don’t have it, they say, and I want it. Highly creative adults, like kids, say it’s better to be an adult. Okay, who do you want to hire, people who want responsibility or people who don't? Firms have traditionally hired for stability, meaning settlers, aka change resisters, who won’t rock the boat.
