🎶 𝐓𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐃’𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: Julia Meacham 💜 Jules is TREND’s Music Publicity Intern, who has been here for the last couple of months. We are happy to have her on our team! 🎙️𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗗? : So far at TREND, I’ve learned how the PR process works from start to finish, including drafting a contact sheet, writing a press release, and reaching out to the press. I’ve also learned a lot about how to make connections to network in the music industry and how to set yourself apart. 🎙️𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽? : My favorite part of my internship is that we’re able to learn from and get to know all of the senior staff at TREND. It is really cool that we get to do assignments and tasks for different publicists and learn their writing styles and personalities. I also love that there is no sense of hierarchy and we are able to share our ideas and opinions openly! 🎙️𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆? : I have loved and been involved in music since I was little, whether that was joining every choir group possible, performing in musicals, or learning the ins out outs of the recording studio. From Internship to Full-Time Success: My Journey in the Music Industry

Looks like summer music internships are popping up! Internships, in general, are a fantastic way to get your feet wet in any industry. I actually interned in local television before finding my way to music. I tried some things I might not have otherwise, like writing stories and filming trailers for local news. Even though I ended up on a different path, I still have some great memories from those internships. A few years later, I was overseeing interns in the mechanical licensing department, and about 60% of my interns went on to be hired somewhere in the company, some of which I'm still working with over a decade later. Here are a few thoughts to keep in mind: - Don't forget there are LOTS of jobs in the industry, so consider some of the less obvious/glamorous ones - you might find you like copyright or contracts! - Internships are also a great way to figure out what you DON'T want to do. That piece of knowledge is just as valuable as knowing your dream path. - When it comes to getting a job, your network is key, so take the opportunity to connect with people. - Be curious. Personally, I'd much rather an intern (or any employee really) ask me for context than just blindly go along with an instruction without seeking understanding. - Take the time to observe and navigate workplace culture. Learning soft skills is critical. - Listen. I can't emphasize this one enough as just actively listening allows you to learn so much. Additionally, I have learned how to leverage digital platforms to enhance brand visibility and engagement strategically. 🎙️𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽? : As a very hands-on, visual learner, TREND's commitment to providing interns with hands-on experience in both the Publicity and Social Media divisions is my favorite part of the internship. I also enjoy that I can learn from and work directly with senior staff members, sending and writing pitches and press releases with their guidance. 🎙️𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆? : Music has always been a driving force in my life, whether it be songwriting, keeping up with music trends/news, or just blasting and singing my favorite songs in the car. Music is necessary in my daily life, and I honestly can't see myself doing anything else. “Finding Resources as an Intern” Internship as a music therapist can be a very dichotomous experience, evoking feelings of stress, joy, loneliness, community, creativity, burnout, and so many other complex emotions. Throughout this time, one of the best coping strategies to further your education and longevity in the field is to connect with the resources available to you as a music therapy intern. However, going about this journey on top of an internship can feel daunting, so I decided to give you a head start! I have put together a living document for music therapy interns that includes resources like scholarships, podcasts, blogs, regional websites, and more. This document will be constantly updated to remain relevant and accurate. Furthermore, with this document I hope to create a space for sharing and community. During internship, it's important to fall into community. You don’t have to shoulder the burden of solving everything yourself, and you don't have to have all the answers. In that same vein, please continue to share resources and personal experiences with AMTAS, your program-mates, and other students across the region. My favorite aspect of the internship is how hands-on our daily tasks are. These tasks provide us with valuable experience and knowledge that not a lot of internships do. The senior staff provides supportive guidance when educating us about our tasks and are always open to helping us in any way they can. 🎙️: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆? Growing up, I have always found comfort and inspiration in music and developed a deep love for it. Whether that be through performing, keeping up with my favorite artists, or just losing myself in it, music has always been a constant in my life. I can't see my life without music being a part of my daily life, and my passion for it has driven me to pursue a career in it. The music industry’s constant evolution excites me, presenting both challenges and opportunities that fuel my ambition. When I was pursuing my masters, I worked as a production assistant in an AD production house. I was young (21), far away from home in a foreign city (L.A), and to say the very least, it was an extremely intimidating space. It was full of directors, producers and what not. I got to experience a real "intern" experience there. Somedays I would be asked to set up the table, bring in food, coffee, so somedays I'd be filling in at the main desk whenever the person wouldn't be there and recieve couriers and what not. But regardless, I was never really allowed to weigh in my opinions during meetings. But even though the work ended up being such, I never stopped observing. The way they would close deals, what are they talking, how are they talking, how are creatives written, every little detail I kept registering in the back of my mind. Even though I was not allowed to actively be involved in projects, I observed and soaked in as much as I could. But I do wish amidst all that, I had a mentor. Someone who would have just guided me to do certain things a certain way, I feel that would have made such a huge difference. And today as I run my own workspace and company, that's one essential I seek to have for everyone who joins TAT. An opportunity to learn and grow together, where you're not on your own. It's a team for a reason right? And also, I do personally feel that no work is meaningless especially when you are out there to get that experience but for especially interns, one must be made aware of their entire work scope because sometimes it can get a bit tricky because as an intern we don't usually know what exactly we are signing up for, even today I have noticed the same in most spaces where interns end up becoming free extended labour with meek work boundaries. Our new BASIC internship started this month. Six former unemployed young people who came into our program learning so much in the next 12 months. We teach our interns many different skills and life lessons. Today we talked in artistry skills training about the design rule of the golden ratio. We looked at our bodies and into nature to find it.
