The recent deployment of #MethaneSAT into orbit marks a pivotal moment for environmental responsibility, offering unprecedented access to global methane #emissions data—free, fast, and transparent. This innovative satellite technology is set to enhance #methane detection accuracy significantly, playing a vital role in the battle against climate change. Amidst this technological leap, 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡'𝐬 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐭-𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡 proves indispensable for the oil and gas sector, equipping businesses for an era dominated by real-time methane insights to streamline #emission reductions. However, it's startling to note that even regulators may not fully grasp that only a fraction of 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬 undergo testing post-manufacture—merely 20%—leading to potential leaks and performance issues. This oversight highlights a critical assumption that such components comply with API2000/ International Standards without fail. Acknowledging and integrating these advancements and insights underscore the crucial need for proactive #environmental stewardship and a deeper understanding of equipment #compliance within regulatory frameworks.

Whilst the UK’s energy industry transitions to a low-carbon sector, the nation is still dependent on oil and gas. Although, our Energy Transition Outlook UK 2024 forecasts that fossil fuels will make up 35% of energy supply in 2050, it’s important to continually plan, educate and simulate real world events to ensure that the sector continues to move forward and is aware of the dangers of new fuels, such as hydrogen.   For over 40 years, DNV Research and Development at Spadeadam has conducted full scale testing to assess the consequences of major hazards and their effects on people and properties. The results have been used to develop products, protect people and infrastructure from both accidental and deliberate threats. Increasingly, the centre is focusing on research into low carbon technologies. Across the globe, oil and gas production companies are investing in new processes and technologies to minimize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and advance decarbonization efforts in their production wells, tank farms, refineries, chemical plants, and pipeline operations. One area being transformed by these new control and monitoring systems is the industry-wide effort to minimize fugitive GHG emissions. Technology to address fugitive emissions include smart, rugged solenoid-operated and electric valve systems for upstream oil and gas extraction designed to significantly reduce emissions at the well head and storage and separator systems. There are also reliable monitoring technologies that can help ensure thief hatches are locked on tank storage systems.
