A #MOPs manager and a prospect walk into a bar. The prospect walks up to the counter and says "I want a beer!" The bartender looks at her and turns and continues cleaning glasses. The prospect, after getting ghosted, gets up and walks to Martini's, which pours her a drink. Another prospect walks into the bar, tells the #MOPs manager, "I want a beer!" and again is introduced to the bartender, who takes a glance at the prospect and continues to clean glasses and get a new keg from the back. This second prospect, pissed from getting ghosted, gets up and walks to MacLauren's and gets a beer. A third prospect walks up the #MOPs manager, indicates that he wants a beer, and gets the same treatment. He mutters something under their breath and then walks over to Moe's Tavern, where he gets a beer. Now, the #MOPs manager is beside herself. Here's three legit hand raisers who just got no love from her #Sales rep and marketing just got these three people, who ALL bought beers at other bars, marked as disqualified (which doesn't make her stakeholders look good at all). #MOPs manager: “Okay, what gives?” The #Sales rep, smugly, tells her. "Well, that first person was wearing a Superman T-Shirt, and we can't serve DC comics people. We want to get a spot in the next Marvel movie... did you see what that did for Southern Comfort? The second person was wearing a NY Giants' jersey. We're a Cowboys bar. Come on, don't you know this? And the third? Homer Simpson? Come on. Why would I take him seriously?" But the #MOPs manager says, "THEY ALL BOUGHT BEERS AT OTHER BARS! WE SELL BEER! Why is your ICP so narrow that you just lost three deals?" The Sales Rep said, "Well, we're niche." Finally, walking way, the #MOPs manager says "Yeah, niching yourself out of business." ----- This was one of the great insights from #MOPsUnplugged this month. Carissa M. talks about how many sales reps will, sight-unseen, disqualify good leads (even hand-raisers!) because they don't meet this mystical "Perfect ICP" that has been set, but are eager to apply and buy your product? Are we being too narrow, especially when some of our technology has many valuable use cases? To listen to this insight and many more great thoughts, watch the #MOPsUnplugged Session 3 (link in the comments) to gain insights on improving the Sales process for #MarTech (and other) buyers. It's a great watch. Thanks also to Paul Wilson Jon Westover Justin Norris Moni Oloyede and Thao Ngo 💜 from Uptempo for the great production.
