We are proud to support the Horizon Europe Innovation Action project ‘Sustainable Circular Economy Transition: from Industrial Symbiosis to Hubs for Circularity (IS2H4C)' The project is a transformative initiative led by devrim murat yazan’s team at University of Twente. With funding of 20 million euros from the European Commission (raising the total to 23.5 million euros) this project entails the collaboration of 35 partners to implement sustainable regional development models in four key European hubs located in the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, and Türkiye. The primary goal is achieving near zero emission regions by strategically promoting industrial symbiosis and deploying systemic symbiotic partnerships between industries, harnessing innovative technologies like carbon capture and electrolysis. 🌟 Partner Highlight 🌟 Introducing The Flemish Institute for Technological Research - VITO. 💡 VITO is internationally recognized for its expertise on innovative sensor-based characterization technologies (Characterize-to-Sort) as well as on the development of innovative routes to valorize complex waste streams, combined with a strong knowledge and hands-on expertise on waste recycling technologies. VITO de-risks innovation for businesses and strengthen the economic and societal fabric of Flanders, with interdisciplinary research and large-scale pilot installations. 🤝In the #ReUse project, VITO will develop the automated sorting of EoL LFP batteries from a mixed stream of waste Li-ion batteries. 👉 Therefore, VITO will apply advanced sensor-based technology and develop a classification model to recognise and subsequently sort LFP batteries. Let's have a look at what was going on in the European #circulareconomy in October: - In Austria, the Minister for Climate Protection Leonore Gewessler and Minister of Economics Martin Kocher gave the go-ahead for the circular #economy task force. It was introduced by the Austrian federal government to accompany the implementation of a circular economy strategy, whilst critically examining it and evaluating it accordingly. The task force had its constituent meeting on October 5th. ♻️ - On October 6th, the European Commission has published a set of policy recommendations for #EU Member States to improve and incentivise the return of used and discarded mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and their chargers. The recommendations – including financial incentives such as discounts, vouchers, deposit-return schemes, or monetary rewards – aim to support national authorities to ensure maximum collection rates and subsequent re-use, repair, refurbishment, and recovery of these small electronic devices. 🇪🇺 - For the 5th year in a row, ARA - Altstoff Recycling Austria AG presents the ARA Circular Economy Barometer, an index that measures the status of the circular economy in Austrian companies. Despite geopolitical conflicts, insolvencies and inflation, the index nevertheless flattened out only slightly, confirming the high significance of the circular economy: 8/10 companies in Austria have invested in the circular economy. A total of 21% of the total investments went to the circular economy in 2022. This means that every 5th invested euro goes to the circular economy, compared to 14% in 2021, which is only every seventh euro. 💪🏼 - In October, the FRZ Flughafenregion Zürich - Wirtschaftsnetzwerk & Standortentwicklung is launching a project to #recycle and reuse information and communication technology (ICT) equipment. It is being realised in cooperation with members of the FRZ Zurich Airport Region and partners such as Klein Computer System AG and Hewlett Packard Enterprise. The aim of the project is to reduce CO2 emissions and the demand for raw materials by reusing and upcycling ICT hardware. ✈️ - As part of the zirkulierBAR project, Germany's first research facility for recycling waste of dry toilets has been inaugurated in Eberswalde. ZirkulierBAR is a research project in which municipalities and future-oriented companies work together with universities and research institutions to create a testing environment for a sustainable regional circular economy. The project is led by the Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) and funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany as part of the REGION.innovativ funding measure. 👩🏼🔬 - The new EU project LET'S GO CIRCULAR! has been launched under the leadership of the city of Munich. Ten cities from across Europe have joined forces to promote the shift towards a circular city. The network is funded by the European URBACT programme for sustainable urban development. 💚
