I worked at EY for a loooong time. My time at EY was pretty much a roller coaster ride - a thrilling one with its share of peaks and dives. A few twists and turns from Cleveland to DC, London, and San Francisco. Balancing auditing with law school meant late nights became my norm. At times, it was overwhelming. But, here's the thing - I wasn't alone. The partners at EY are rockstars. They had my back through every twist and turn. Heartbroken in Cleveland? They offered a change - a fresh start in none other than D.C. Opportunity to move abroad go for it. A chance to work in Silicon Valley - here you go. I can't thank the partners from EY enough! My two cents? Public accounting isn't a simple stroll in the park. It's more like a marathon - challenging but rewarding. Major leadership changes are afoot at two of the Big Four accounting firms. For the top job, PwC appointed a consultant and EY picked a financial-services executive with an accounting background, capturing the continuing tug-and-pull between the Big Four’s core business lines.

I always thought - and said - that my role with Grant Thornton LLP (US) would be my last full-time job, and it was. Although it ended before I expected (hey, life happens) I have made a successful transition to being an independent consultant. This would not have been possible without many people, but most particularly those with whom I have worked in the past who reached out to offer ideas, advice, referrals - and engagements. Today I am working with several clients, in a variety of sectors. But they all have a few things in common; 1) a genuine commitment to managing their business well over the long as well as short term 2) understanding that being the preferred provider, employer, customer, investment and community partner defines the pathway to success 3) a sense of the 'value' that they bring with their products and services, and also the manner in which they produce them

Here we go – with the CEO of Deloitte, Ireland! 🔊 I had the opportunity to interview Harry Goddard, CEO of Deloitte Ireland. I would like to say a big thank you to Mr. Goddard for taking the time and for inviting me to Deloitte to do this interview. Advice to Young Professionals 📚: He emphasises the importance of adaptability and seizing opportunities as they arise. He reflects on his own career path, sharing, "When I graduated from college, my dad said to me...would you not do a B.Com and go and join one of the accounting firms? I said, not a chance! ... yet here I am." Furthermore, he highlights the necessity of hard work and embracing discomfort for growth, advising to be "comfortable being uncomfortable" as this fosters personal and professional development. Finally, he stresses the importance of enjoying one’s work, as "the more you enjoy it, the better you'll get at it," creating a virtuous cycle of improvement and satisfaction. Technology and Transformation 🚀: Discussing the transformative impact of GenAI on Deloitte, he acknowledges the significant changes it brings to their services, automating much of the knowledge economy. He states, "We see that a significant amount of our services could be impacted, potentially either diminished, made redundant, or automated." In response, Deloitte is proactively transforming its internal services and integrating GenAI into their offerings. They have developed an internal tool called Paired, powered by ChatGPT-4, to enhance productivity. He emphasises the need to stay ahead of technological advancements, pointing out that clients expect Deloitte to not only become more efficient but also to help them innovate new services. Key Leadership Insights 🧠: He emphasises the importance of making tough decisions and acknowledging the loneliness that often accompanies senior roles by stating that "A lot of being in a role, whatever it is, requires you to make really tough decisions. And the more senior you are, the more on your own you are." He also highlights the necessity of a clear vision and team alignment, asserting, "If you've got a team that's aligned, that's got the followership within the business, that's clear about the plan, the strategy, and also the end state, that's when you start to become unstoppable." Furthermore, he concludes with the value of diversity in decision-making, adding, "If you find yourself where everybody's agreeing all the time, you've probably got the wrong group of people around you." "There's a buzz in Cork city about EY's plans to create 100 new jobs in the financial sector. It's quite big news, really. Think about it. More than half those positions are pegged for recent college grads. These fresh-faced achievers will represent a number of fields, including consulting, business advisory and more. That's not all. Turns out a brand new office space is in the works too. It's all part of EY's shifting gears towards becoming a full-service professional services firm. EY's strategy resonates with me. It's exciting to see a traditional audit firm evolving so boldly. This move also signals growth. EY's business in the region has already experienced a one-third uptick in the past three years. Let's keep our fingers crossed for more innovative strategies that could help empower small businesses and accounting firms across the region. I started my career at Ernst and Young, the first class post-merger between Ernst and Whinney and Arthur Young. The pyramid model was well known, and we were worked hard, developed, taught, and trained. The audit rooms provided an opportunity to make lifelong friends, and every day was spent with very smart people. Despite complaining about the long hours during the busy season, in retrospect, it was worth it. Regarding the recent Senate inquiry, one wonders what they hope to accomplish. It's important to recognize that some of the best and brightest individuals work in the accounting industry.
