Ever wondered what your wait time variation is from one surgeon to another for elective surgery? 🤔 A recent study highlights a critical issue in healthcare: the significant variation in wait times for surgical procedures across different providers and facilities. The analysis of 942,605 procedures revealed discrepancies as high as 216-fold in wait times, underscoring the uneven delivery of care due to supply-demand challenges across our region. At Sifio Health, we've seen firsthand the impact of targeted interventions. By partnering with healthcare providers, we've demonstrated that it's possible to significantly reduce these wait times using existing resources. The potential for system-wide improvements is real and within reach—it's time we work together to ensure equitable access to care for all patients. Interesting study in Health Affairs which evaluated the rates of elective versus emergency surgery for patients with three access-sensitive surgical conditions (incisional hernia repair, colectomy for cancer, AAA repair) living in primary care Health Professional Shortage Areas during 2015–19. Medicare beneficiaries in more severe primary care shortage areas had higher rates of emergency surgery compared with rates in the least severe shortage areas (37.8 percent versus 29.9 percent). They were also more likely to have serious complications (14.9 percent versus 11.7 percent) and readmissions (15.7 percent versus 13.5 percent). Patient online decision guide: https://lnkd.in/eW9TJEwK So, if you, as patient, have conviction in the body's ability to naturally heal; if you're willing to commit to a thorough rehab process; if surgery just doesn't align with your values, you have options. Of course here we are talking about ACL reconstructive surgery. Surgeons, primary care physicians, and even physical therapists simply knee jerk (pun) to recommending surgery. But it's symptomatic of the flaws systemwide. In the meanwhile, significant evidence via randomized control trials (the best trials to conduct studies) show that, *with proper protocols*, you may not need surgery at all. More disconcerting about this is that our providers stateside are quoting other POOR studies in making recommendations. One cannot just read an abstract; one must look at the study design, controls, methods to determine if the results are truly measuring the problem being hypothesized. If we truly value customers, we'll follow the work coming out of Australia. Alison Synakowski, PT, DPT, OCS, AT is now implementing these protocols stateside and patients as far as the other side of the country are finding her b/c the adoption rate of new research in clinical practice in the US is so low. #NEWS A Public Health Wales study exploring prehabilitation interventions conducted in response to concerns over long waiting times after the covid pandemic, has identified that more research is needed to fully understand their effectiveness for improving patients’ health whilst waiting for surgery. Prehabilitation is an approach aimed at improving the health of patients before they undergo surgical procedures. Unlike rehabilitation, which focuses on recovery after surgery, prehabilitation focuses on preparing patients physically, mentally, and emotionally prior to their surgery. 💬 Amy Hookway, Principal Evidence and Knowledge Analyst at Public Health Wales said: “While this review highlights a diverse range of interventions available for patients awaiting surgery, it also shows that some of the evidence for their effectiveness remains inconsistent. To help improve patient outcomes it's imperative that further studies are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions.” The review findings are expected to help with policy development and allocation of resources in Wales, aiming to limit the ill-effects of long surgical waiting times on patient health and well-being. What is a TAVR? ❤️🫀 TAVR, or Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement, is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat aortic stenosis by replacing a narrowed aortic valve with a new artificial valve. It involves inserting a catheter through a blood vessel and guiding it to the aortic valve, where the replacement valve is deployed without the need for open-heart surgery. Arctic Valve Replacement is typically considered for patients who are at higher risk for traditional surgical valve replacement and offers a less invasive option for improving heart function.
