According to a new Canadian study, some women with early-stage #cervicalcancer can be safely treated with a less-invasive #hysterectomy that has fewer complications. The current standard treatment for early-stage cervix cancer is a radical hysterectomy, removing not only the uterus and cervix, but also the surrounding tissue and up to one-third of the vagina. Alternatively, the researchers found that women who had a simple hysterectomy (a less-invasive procedure wherein the surrounding tissue and most of the vagina remain intact) were at no higher risk of #cancer recurring in the pelvic area after three years than those who had a radical hysterectomy. Also, women who underwent a radical hysterectomy were more likely to have #urinaryincontinence (loss of bladder control) and sexual side-effects after surgery. However, the simple hysterectomy should only be an option for cervical cancer patients who have early-stage disease, with superficial lesions less than or equal to 2 centimeters and do not have lymph node involvement. There has been a gradual trend whereby physicians have started to suggest less radical surgery is sufficient for these select patients and the results of this study further substantiate that less-invasive surgery is also a safe option for patients. 🌟 Join the fight against women's cancers. What is breast cancer? | program #Emirates_Morning. Breast cancer is a disease in which abnormal breast cells grow out of control and form tumours. If left unchecked, the tumours can spread throughout the body and become fatal. Breast cancer cells begin inside the milk ducts and/or the milk-producing lobules of the breast. The earliest form (in situ) is not life-threatening and can be detected in early stages. Cancer cells can spread into nearby breast tissue (invasion). This creates tumours that cause lumps or thickening.  Invasive cancers can spread to nearby lymph nodes or other organs (metastasize). Metastasis can be life-threatening and fatal. Treatment is based on the person, the type of cancer and its spread. Treatment combines surgery, radiation therapy and medications. Scope of the problem In 2022, there were 2.3 million women diagnosed with breast cancer and 670 000 deaths globally. #BreastCancer occurs in every country of the world in women at any age after puberty but with increasing rates in later life.  Global estimates reveal striking inequities in the breast cancer burden according to human development. For instance, in countries with a very high Human Development Index (HDI), 1 in 12 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime and 1 in 71 women die of it. In contrast, in countries with a low HDI; while only 1 in 27 women is diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, 1 in 48 women will die from it.

Devestating update I have some particularly devastating news to share, although it has now been 24 months since the original brain cancer diagnosis. The aggressive Glioblastoma tumour has returned albeit in a different part of Tracy's brain. Tracy had recently experienced paralysis down her right leg, being unable to walk correctly without aid, after MRI scans showing a lesion on the left motor neuron part of the brain that controls the right side of the body, we can now confirm it is due to a re-occurrence. The original area that had the first tumour is clean giving the indication that the DCVAX-L vaccine had worked to some degree in that area, however Glioblastoma is a sneaky unrelenting disease looking to infect other areas and destroy healthy cells. On Wednesday 22 May 2024, four days after Tracy’s 49th Birthday she will be going to the Baumount hospital in Dublin for another Brain surgery operation. Again, this will involve major stress, uncertainty of outcome, recovery, chemo and maybe radiotherapy. We fully intend to keep getting the DCVAX-L vaccine post-surgery, as this is a new tumour and like the previous area may respond well to focused targeting immediately after surgery to clean it out. We take each day a step at a time, Tracy is incredibly brave having to face this but she is still very much determined to keep fighting this disease for herself and our 7 year old son. When this cancer rears its ugly head she beats it down, she never gives up and we pray that our strategy to attack the cancer will eventually work. #glioblastoma #braincancer #fightingcancer #nevergiveuphope

The Cancer That Doctors Don't Want to Call Cancer: When is cancer not cancer? It's an unexpected question that has stirred the world of cancer treatment in recent years, most notably now with prostate cancer. WSJ: A growing number of doctors are advocating what might seem like an unusual position: That low-grade prostate cancers that grow very slowly or not at all shouldn't be called cancer or carcinoma. The reason, they say, is that those words scare men, their families and sometimes even their doctors into seeking more aggressive treatment than patients need -- leaving men with debilitating side effects -- rather than pursuing a carefully monitored wait-and-see approach. A name change wouldn't be unprecedented. Certain other forms of thyroid, cervical and bladder cancers have been reclassified, sometimes partly to avoid scaring people about cancers that are unlikely to spread. "The word 'cancer' engenders so much anxiety and fear," says Dr. Laura Esserman, a professor of surgery and radiology at the University of California, San Francisco and director of its Breast Care Center, who is advocating for a type of lower-risk breast cancer to be renamed.
