The glitch is due to a software update of CrowdStrike's EDR product. This is a product that runs with high privileges that protects endpoints. A malfunction in this can, as we are seeing in the current incident, cause the operating system to crash. Organizations heavily reliant on Windows systems are facing operational challenges and potential financial losses. A massive tech failure has caused travel chaos around the world, with banking and healthcare services also badly hit. The glitch in CrowdStrike led to delays and cancellations as airlines were struggling to manage check-in, booking, and other routine activities. CrowdStrike is aware of reports of crashes on Windows hosts related to the Falcon Sensor. Symptoms include hosts experiencing a bugcheck\blue screen error related to the Falcon Sensor.

Don't worry! There's a patch for that! After taking a $500M hit from the CrowdStrike technology outage, Delta is coming out swinging and looking to hold CrowdStrike and Microsoft accountable. For decades, attempts to hold tech companies liable for faulty products and outages has mostly been a losing proposition. Contract terms generally insulate technology makers from responsibility. Heck, the whole software industry is built on a model that allows vendors to ship flawed products and issue a continuous wave of patches the first Tuesday of every month. This will be an interesting case to watch as this will test whether or not software developers/tech companies can be held financially liable for faulty products, or if they can continue to be shielded through issuance of patches.
