This month, we join our Office of Inclusion and Diversity and the DiverseAbilities Employee Resource Group in celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). Each October, NDEAM highlights the value and talent that workers with disabilities contribute to America’s workplaces and economy.
This observance reaffirms our commitment to ensuring that individuals with disabilities have access to good jobs, not just in October, but throughout the year. This year’s theme, “Access to Good Jobs for All,” underscores the importance of inclusive employment practices.
There are a few ways we encourage our caregivers to anticipate the needs of others with disabilities:
- Use Respectful Language: Avoid using outdated or offensive terminology when referring to individuals with disabilities.
- Utilize Available Resources: Make the most of our Learning Space and the Caregiver Resource Center for educational materials, policy reviews, and other resources related to disability.
- Update Workspaces: Take this month as an opportunity to ensure that all workspaces are equipped with current accommodations for individuals with disabilities.
- Learn Common Icons: Familiarize yourself with common icons that assist persons with disabilities, as this can help in understanding and meeting various needs.
- Acknowledge Invisible Disabilities: Remember that not all disabilities are visible. Be mindful and considerate of this fact.
- Ask Before Assisting: Avoid assuming that assistance is needed. Always ask first.
