In the course of this year, I've had the opportunity to engage in discussions with individuals in caregiving roles, an endeavor that can be particularly daunting when undertaken solo. Acting as the sole dedicated caregiver for a relative or close member in need of care comes with significant challenges. Prioritizing your own well-being is imperative. Take moments for self-care and consider allowing others to step in and offer support in that caregiving role. Implementing a caregiver wellness program in the workplace is crucial for supporting the mental and physical well-being of employees in caregiving roles. This program should include flexible work arrangements, counseling services, and educational resources to help caregivers balance their professional and personal responsibilities. Providing a supportive work environment can contribute to reduced stress, increased productivity, and overall job satisfaction for caregivers. #mentalhealth #careforcaregivers #awareness #caregivers

This experience has highlighted the critical importance for organizations worldwide to recognize caregiving as a valuable skill in the workplace. Can we Recognise Caregiving as a Valuable Skill in the Workplace? As professionals, we often underestimate the skills we acquire outside the workplace, particularly through caregiving. Whether it's caring for children, family members, or elderly parents, these experiences develop a diverse set of skills that are directly applicable in the professional world. Caregiving teaches us invaluable organizational skills. Managing the schedules, appointments, and needs of those we care for requires a high level of coordination and planning, skills that are equally crucial in a professional setting. Furthermore, caregiving hones our communication skills. From explaining complex information to coordinating care with healthcare providers, caregivers become adept at clear and effective communication, a skill highly valued in any workplace. Caregiving also nurtures our emotional intelligence. Understanding and responding to the needs and emotions of those we care for teaches empathy, patience, and adaptability, qualities essential for building strong professional relationships and navigating workplace challenges. Despite these clear parallels, caregiving skills are often overlooked or undervalued in the workplace. It's time for a paradigm shift. Individuals who have experience in caregiving, whether for children, family members, or elderly parents, should proudly highlight these experiences on their resumes and in interviews. Similarly, organisations need to recognise and value caregiving as a skill in itself. Incorporating caregiving experience into hiring criteria and professional development programs can lead to a more diverse and empathetic workforce. Another article about #mentalhealth concerns for working parents and burnout! It is time to get to the root cause of many of these #mentalhealth challenges = #caregiving. Over 72% of caregivers report clinical symptoms of depression. This article shines a bright light on working parents who are under immense pressure, add in taking care of mom or dad, or a sick loved one, and these numbers in this article are off the charts. Being a caregiver for over 20 years (son = leukemia survivor, mom = breast cancer survivor, brother = took his life at 15, dad = quad bypass and rare blood infection survivor, daughter = mental health survivor) and knowing first hand the lack of help that caregivers have access to is ridiculous. This is a crisis that isn't going away, by 2035 there will be more people over 65 than under 18, we have a lack of childcare, the childcare that is available is too expensive for a number of reasons, the healthcare system focuses on the patient, the healthcare system is hard to navigate, 95% of care happens in the home, economy has been better, things are expensive, how do you pay for them, and rarely any attention paid to the caregiver. When my wife and I left the hospital in May of 2013, after our son was diagnosed with Leukemia, we got a 3 ring binder of information and a see you at his next appointment - huh, really, that's the plan????? Now lets apply this same situation to the airline industry - you are waiting for your flight with your loved ones, you board your flight (which you paid a lot for), there is no one else on the flight, the gate agent tells you something about the engine needing service, they hand you a 3 ring binder of instructions and tell you to fly the plane, and if the engine fails, instructions on how to fix it is in the binder - good luck. Oh and on top of that don't forget to work your job, pay your bills, raise 2 other kids, help your parents who are failing, keep your pets alive, among all the other life events. NO WONDER THERE IS A MENTAL HEALTH/BURNOUT CONCERN. Sometimes, as good as our intentions are, it can be difficult to put DEI practices into tangible forms (outside of coaching and education). Benefits are a great place to do this. This report from HR Dive has some great suggestions, but some other things I've seen are: - Not just maternity leave, but paternity leave, or parental leave for adoption - Flexible leave programs for Foster Parents - Fertility support included in medical benefits - Gender affirming care included in medical benefits - Remote working options for those with physical disabilities, mental health issues, or caregivers - L&D budgets, or accounts for those who want to invest in themselves but may not have the financial means - Childcare benefit to help offset the cost of day care - Additional budget for registered counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists (the standard $500 will potentially get you 2 sessions and when you really need that support, 2 sessions is very often not enough.)
