Winning awards often don't mean anything. From time to time, i get approached by people who want to make news about their awards. "Why didn't I get media coverage? I won this award..." Here's why most awards will not get media coverage: 🏆 Everyday, someone gets an awards somewhere across the world. 🏆 Most awards are paid. It's seen as a marketing tactic It's not news. 📰 When will awards get coverage? Maybe, if a government minister handed you an award. Or Its an award that everyone recognises e.g. Forbes 30u30 and you're one of the rare few in your country to recieve it. TLDR: Awards could be used to add credibility to your business or your personal brand but it is not going to make news. #publicrelations #pragency #awardsarentalwaysabigdeal

Reflecting on our discussion from Thursday, it's evident that there's a clear distinction between news and awards. Both play a crucial role in building credibility and awareness, yet they serve different purposes. The question now is, which one holds more value? I believe it would be the one that's more challenging to secure.

What!?!!%* Now then you say… I want a refund!! Haha just kidding.

Funny thing is, here in Malaysia, we can "buy" awards and "Dato" Titleship. Well, it helps in a minor way, but in the long term, I see so many flops and lose trust in businesses because their actions are not aligned with their "purchased brand." I have been "offered" a few times to "win" an award for $10K, with a guaranteed interview session. but i rejected them all..haha...

People paying to get awarded was one enlightening moment for me years back. I’ve never looked at awards the same again.

totally agree with that… those awards simply stroke the pride and inflated ego of people who paid for it… in today’s time and age, i m still surprised that they think people don’t know they paid for it…

Not forgetting that the media sells these awards too (even Fast Company) 😆

Indeed! As for "Forbes 30u30." or its equivalent, we also must be cautious about thinking too much about it. https://www.businessinsider.com/forbes-hall-shame-30-under-30-lists-regrets-sbf-ftx-2023-11

Fully agree. There are so many awards that can simply be achieved through paying Christel Goh. I have been very careful in accepting awards. I only accept those that come through a nomination and judging panels. Happy that my Singapore 40 over 40, Coach Awards and Globant Women that Builds all came that way. These may not be media worthy, but gives great credibility in my reinvention journey :).

The greatest reward apart from an award is a happy client that will sing praises of you when you are not in the room. Recently I lost out on an award but my client turned, looked me in the eye and said calmly and firmly "you don't need an award, you have won our hearts". It was a moment to remember and to remind myself that every little thing we do is appreciated.

I think focus on creating value for the world and less on awards and you might to start to notice a difference
