Exciting news! Working with the town of Medfield, MA, we are set to begin revitalizing the Medfield State Hospital campus, securing funding through the ‘Housing Works Infrastructure Program’ and the ‘Underutilized Properties Program 2023’ awards. This transformative collaboration targets underdeveloped properties, signaling a key move to eliminate blight and boost economic development in Medfield. Administered by the Community One Stop for Growth Program, a substantial grant of nearly $5 million has been allocated for redevelopment, envisioning the transformation of the historic campus into 334 mixed-income housing units, with 25% committed to affordability. This funding will be used towards infrastructure improvements and hazardous materials investigation.The project aligns with the Subsidized Housing Inventory, ensuring 100% eligibility, and stands out for its focus on affordability, with 85 units catering to those below 80% of the Area Median Income. There's a growing interest in more effectively integrating urban infrastructure into our cityscapes. Historically, the urban places created by water, energy, and waste infrastructure have often been restricted, underutilised or poorly managed. By enhancing the multi-functionality of urban infrastructure spaces, we can enhance the liveability of places, promote ecological health, and support more effective infrastructure. In our new publication, Reena Tiwari, Prof Marian Tye and I explore the creation of a ‘green, blue and smart’ infrastructural space, the transformation of a fenced off stormwater drain into the Wharf Street Next Generation Community Park (WSNGCP) in the Canning City Centre. Detroit Future City's Land Use & Sustainability department aims to promote equity and sustainability in Detroit neighborhoods. They work closely with community and civic leaders to provide training, technical assistance, and support for open space projects. The department is working with the Land and Water Works Coalition and providing consulting services to promote Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI). Their ‘Working with Lots’ program has helped implement over 50 open space projects in Detroit neighborhoods by providing grants and technical assistance to residents looking to transform vacant lots into productive landscapes.
