Fortune 500 companies and reputable suppliers will view the Maryland consumer market as essentially closed for business if SB 1 is signed. This will set the energy market back 100 years and tell Maryland customers who shop the retail market their choices do not matter. #ChooseWhoYouUse to keep the power in the end and preserve energy choice. Veto SB 1.

Maryland deserves Energy Choice! As a resident as well as employee with a retail energy company, I believe all residents need a choice. Retail Energy Companies Impact the Maryland Economy Supporters of proposed legislation, SB 1/HB 267, claim the legislation will protect consumers. The reality is SB 1 is anti-consumer, anti-business, and anti-environment. It will essentially end retail choice for Maryland’s retail and gas consumers and drive business out of Maryland. The retail energy industry has many well-established businesses that have responsibly served more than 500,000 Maryland consumers for years. If passed, the legislation will tell Fortune 500 companies, like NRG and Constellation, the Maryland market is essentially closed for business. Marylanders will lose jobs, and the loss of the retail energy industry will have a significant impact on Maryland’s economy. A recent economic impact analysis shows just how much of an impact SB 1 will have. In FY 2023, NRG had a total impact of $24.9 million on Maryland’s economy. That includes $5.7 million in direct impact and $19.2 million in indirect and induced impact. Further, NRG supports 150 jobs in Maryland, including 78 direct jobs and 72 indirect and induced jobs. The company pays $18.5 million in local and state taxes. Of the total taxes, $13.8 million are from direct sales and tax payments, and $2.8 million are from direct income tax payments. This economic impact analysis demonstrates how one retail energy company impacts Maryland’s economy. Consider the cumulative impact of the many reputable companies who have operated in Maryland for years. SB 1 will drive these businesses out of the state. Ironically, in an attempt to clean up the market, the legislation could simply leave it with only the worst actors. Keep your voice and your choice. Contact your legislator to encourage them to vote against SB 1/HB 267 or Governor Moore to encourage him to veto this legislation. It takes an active government to build the infrastructure needed to keep the country running optimally. About 100 years ago the U.S. made investments in key infrastructure that pumped our economy and created valuable sources for its long-term future. That investment was the last significant one until the Biden-Harris Administration pressed for one. Once again the U.S. is making some critical investments that will create jobs, provide training, and spurring economic growth. As a an added benefit, this time around more stakeholders are being brought into the process to ensure more positive benefits all around. #infrastructure #federalgovernment #governance #investment #bidenharrisadministration #leavenoonebehind #environmentaljustice #economicjustice U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)
Built nearly 100 years ago, the Hoover Dam is a hallmark of big and bold action in the U.S. We invested in America then and, under the Biden-Harris Administration, we’re investing in America now. By 2030, we expect to add the equivalent of over 300 Hoover Dams-worth of clean energy to our grid.

“Competitive markets, which by the way were a bipartisan idea, have broken up these monopolies in many parts of the country and enabled electricity consumers to enjoy the benefits of competition. Lower prices, more reliability, and efficient investment. In contrast, in monopoly markets, and I looked at the state of Georgia, consumers end up on the hook for supposedly prudent investments even when there are significant cost overruns,” said Representative Ann Kuster (D-NH). On February 14, the House Subcommittee on Energy, Climate, and Grid Security held a hearing on reliability and affordability. Witnesses included: Jim Huston, Chairman, Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission; Nick Myers, Commissioner, Arizona Corporation Commission; Tricia Pridemore, Commissioner, Georgia Public Service Commission; and Keith Hay, Senior Director of Policy, Colorado Energy Office. Rhode Islanders can expect some financial relief this summer, as electricity bills are expected to go down starting next month. Rhode Island Energy is proposing lowering the default rates for electricity in its filings this month to state regulators at the Public Utilities Commission. According to a press release from the utility, an average customer using 500 kilowatt-hours a month can expect the supply charge on their bill to drop 40% compared to the most recent winter rates.
