Following our inaugural #ECNCon23 conference last year, Madison Hicks, Jemima Jones and I have been on a bit of a roadshow… We’ve taken to senior leaders across UK Research and Innovation to demonstrate the impact staff networks like ours can bring, not only to early career colleagues but the organisation as a whole. When you work somewhere that’s comprised of a central hub and 9 distinct research councils, complete with their individual centres and institutes around the country, it can sometimes be hard to find opportunities to connect with colleagues. These peer-to-peer connections are invaluable however, because in my experience, that’s often where innovation lies. The #UKRIEarlyCareerNetwork (ECN) is uniquely positioned to be the missing link, connecting, and upskilling our next generation of future leaders, researchers and enabling colleagues. We do this while simultaneously having an impact on the whole organisation. Events like our conference generate a new wave of interconnected colleagues equipped with skills to drive forward research and innovation in the UK and bring about positive change within teams at all levels. Perhaps the clearest sign we’re on the right track is our ever-increasing membership, now at 500 colleagues. Excitingly, this makes our network over 5% of the organisation’s total headcount, and larger than 5 of its constituent parts. #leadership #LifeAtUKRI #personaldevelopment 📸 Alt Text: Image in original post shows infographic in three parts. Top: titled Growing future leaders with a list of different training delivered from communication to conflict resolution, linking to outcomes, influencing team dynamics, improving communication, inspiring future leaders. Middle: titled supporting each other with the quote "My highlight was meeting colleagues from across the organisation, especially those from different councils that I had come across virtually but never in real life." Additional graphics stating 160% network membership change now over 450 members.
📆 Back in November, we proudly shared the details of the first inaugural Early Career Conference held at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. #ECNCon23 was organised by the UK Research and Innovation's Early Career Network - including Alex Steven, a member of our ASIC Design team and network co-chair. The Early Career Network's goal for the event was to create a new space for colleagues across councils to meet and collaborate, centred around the theme of "Representing Yourself: Unlocking Your Potential." After the success of this transformative event, the network has continued to work diligently to further its aim of "growing future leaders, supporting each other, and influencing UKRI policy." This has included the release of their impact statement, which highlights the positive influence both the network and the conference have had on our early careers colleagues and the organisation as a whole. 📖 Read the #ECN's impact infographic below The #EarlyCareerNetwork is a UKRI-wide staff resource. BE-STEMM 2024 (July 30 – Aug 1 at the Library & Archives Canada, Ottawa) is an opportunity for Black STEMM professionals, researchers and trainees to gather with their allies, to share their research and create connections. Sponsored by CIHR, NSERC, FRQ, Genome Canada, and several universities, BE-STEMM 2024 will feature research talks by more than 50 Black-identifying researchers, 4 keynote talks and a career fair, among many other opportunities for engagement. It is a unique opportunity for Black trainees and researchers to share their work and to meet mentors or collaborators. It is also a unique opportunity for institutions to meet potential new recruits! Registration is currently open for one more week and CBSN (Canadian Black Scientists network) is doing a final push for registrants. The conference website is https://lnkd.in/gTRppDsi Please share this conference information with your respective networks. As an ally of the Canadian Black Scientists network, I strongly encourage you to support this event by encouraging faculty members and their trainees to attend the conference - this is a unique opportunity for allies to show their support through action by attending the conference in person. PS: this message originally comes from Dr. Tamara Franz-Odendaal. I just changed a couple of words here and there.
