In case you missed it, I spoke last week with Kara Němečková from China Observers in Central and Eastern Europe (CHOICE) about Xi’s visit to #Europe and relations between #China and #France 🇪🇺🇨🇳🇫🇷 👉 Strategic ambiguity is paying off for France with China. A bit less for confused European partners. 👉 If China has nothing to offer to Europe this year, the conclusion of so many bilateral agreements makes it a success for France. 👉 Europeanising a bilateral visit is about building credibility and coherence, but also leveraging China. 👉 The consequences of the Hungary visit will be seen at the European Council when difficult decisions will have to be take on China. 👉 The objective of visiting Serbia on the day of the bombing of the Chinese Embassy were clear a clear message to NATO. 🇨🇳 China, China, China. Recent escalating tensions in the South China Sea highlight that there is no consensus in the region over how the Southeast Asian bloc's 11 member states are responding to the rapidly changing geopolitical environment. Although the US says that there is no expectation for nation states to choose, underlying rhetoric is sometimes perceived as an either/or dilemma. This is another great episode of The China Global South Project. Eric Olander 欧瑞克 and the founder of ASEAN Wonk newsletter, Prasanth Parmeswaran, provide a thought-provoking deep dive into these Southeast Asian nations caught in the middle of US/China tension. Expectations need to be managed if headway is to be made with supply chain options outside of China. It very well could be a “both/and equation rather than an either/or.” #china #supplychainmanagement #nationalsecurity #ASEAN #internationalcooperation https://lnkd.in/eUYPdtjj

Chris Johnson on whether or not Xi Jinping has a preferred US candidate for President: “I think the fundamental thing to understand is that, you know, Xi Jinping made a conclusion some time ago, and certainly reinforced in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and so on and so forth, which is that, to some degree, it doesn't really matter who's in the White House. The United States is out to block China's rise, to deny it. It's what it perceives as its rightful place as a leading world power. The technological and other things necessary to facilitate that rise and to ensure China's economy remains strong. So, the approach is set, from China's point of view, which is this is a deep and structural conflict, which our system will ultimately win. And so then it's all about the window dressing at that point.” Listen here: https://lnkd.in/gRFA_98q

https://lnkd.in/dXi4wsmu Dear All, in our latest 'Around the world in 20 minutes' podcast we look at the perils and advantages of using historical analogies (Subtitled: No, Neo-cons, not every crisis is Munich). Like using heavy machinery after a whisky this can be a very dangerous proposition; if the analogy is wrong the analysis and the policy that follows from it is bound to be as well. However, when used responsibly (and when actually knowing that applied history is the absolute key to world-class political risk analysis) analogies can yield creative and cutting-edge insights. For example, ignore the caterwauling about us being in a pre-World War II situation now. Rather, the Indo-Pacific is in real peril of being in a pre-1914 situation. To get the world right now, one simply must know about more than Munich and Vietnam; our age is a time of intellectual seriousness where knowledge (so debased at universities as we have seen) is the once and future greatest gift. Enjoy.
