Senior Global Security & Intelligence Manager | US Coast Guard | MS, CPP, IFPC, Sec + | TS/SCI | I love uncovering & analyzing emerging risks, then leading innovative systemic solutions to fix these complex problems
Monday Memorial Day Meathead Musings: 1. Memento Mori - “Remember you must die.” This day is more personal for some than others, and that’s ok. We all have different experiences, but I think it is important to both have the reverence for the people have sacrificed their lives for us to have the freedom that we do (and it is special if you follow history) - and at the same time do what we can to embrace our own lives, cherish our friends and families, and remember to seize the day. It can be both somber, sad, happy, and beautiful all at the same time. 2. Make it worth it. I would also offer this Memorial Day to not only think about the fallen, but also to think about how we get there. To make sure that we both have a strong defense - but not to create conflict. To make sure we have gone through all options before kinetic conflict, and to also ensure any war is in our vital national interest. But when we do go, do it right. We owe it to those who go in harm’s way to make sure that their fight is both righteous and properly supported. 3. Renaissance Man Movie. On a different note, there is an old movie called “Renaissance Man” with Danny Devito that I always loved growing up. Long story short, and tangential to the plot, Danny Devito’s character talks about the power of the idea of a Renaissance man - someone that is not just good at one thing - but many. They are scholars, athletes, warriors, poets. That ideal has always called to me, and partly I think why I was called to attend a military academy and serve as an officer in the Coast Guard, mixing tactical operations and Intelligence, and continue to nerd out with a variety of interests, some physical, and some mental. “The society that separates its scholars from its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting by fools.” - Thucydides. 4. To that end, I wasn’t really feeling it when I started, but ended up getting a personal best 335 front squat today in the garage gym for my Memorial Day work out. Sometimes just showing up, even when you aren’t feeling it, is the answer.

🎆 Happy 4th of July! Celebrate Safely! 🇺🇸 As we come together to celebrate Independence Day, let’s ensure we do so safely. Here are a few tips to keep in mind: 1. Fireworks Safety 🎇: Always follow local laws and guidelines. Leave the fireworks to the professionals and enjoy public displays instead of handling fireworks at home. 2. Grill with Care 🍔: Keep grills away from structures and overhanging branches. Never leave a grill unattended, and make sure to keep children and pets at a safe distance. 3. Hydrate 💧: Stay hydrated, especially if you’re spending the day outside. Drink plenty of water and avoid excessive alcohol consumption. 4. Sun Protection 🧴🕶️: Use sunscreen with at least SPF 30, wear hats and sunglasses, and seek shade during the peak sun hours between 10 AM and 4 PM. 5. Water Safety 🌊: If you’re planning to swim, ensure everyone knows how to swim, supervise children at all times, and never swim alone. 6. Stay Cool ❄️: Take breaks in the shade or air-conditioned areas to avoid heat-related illnesses. Let’s make this 4th of July a joyful and safe celebration for everyone! Wishing you a wonderful Independence Day! From the Keplar Family

One of our favorite traditions — Reflections for the soul…. Download our guide for the final week of Advent!
To care for your soul and wait on God requires you to return to a childlike place of dependence and wonder. 🚗 As adults, we’ve learned to “get things done” and “make things happen.” The season around Christmas is filled with tasks, parties, and gifts to be procured (even if it is “Buy Now with One Click"). ⏸️ The gift of Advent is that you cannot make it happen. Give yourself to the waiting—rest your souls in the hands of God, and allow your typical ways of “making things happen” slow to a halt. 🎄 Just like a child, knowing they are loved and cared for, trust that there are good things on the other side of the waiting. There are things you didn’t make—flowing from the loving heart of God, for you. 🎁 — "Advent Reflections for the Soul" Download at: https://lnkd.in/g9Jf5fap

A member's son, pictured here, had a bad fall in Colorado Springs while climbing a rock when the family went on a hike. He ended up getting stitches to his face and head. So naturally Naram, their Care Advocate, got him a climbing toy with the message "Laura, I'm hoping that Atlas is never discouraged from exploring again. Hoping this regains his confidence!" Mom said "It made me cry! Thank you so much for such a thoughtful gift." 🧡

Transformative Coach | Keynote Speaker | Shaping Holistic & Safe Driving [email protected]
As we gather to honor the brave men and women who have served our country this Memorial Day, let us also pledge to protect the lives of those around us by practicing safe driving. The roads are not just a network of paths but a web of families, friends, and loved ones, all deserving to reach their destinations safely. Here are some tips to ensure a safe Memorial Day on the road: Prepare Before You Go: Check your vehicle’s maintenance, such as oil levels and tire pressure, to prevent breakdowns and accidents. Buckle Up: Seat belts save lives. Ensure everyone in the car is properly secured before starting your journey. Designate a Sober Driver: Impairment from alcohol or drugs can lead to tragedy. If you plan to celebrate, plan not to drive. Slow Down: Speeding increases the risk of accidents. Observe speed limits and drive according to road conditions. Drive Distraction-Free: Put away mobile devices and focus on the road. Distractions can be fatal. Stay Alert: Long weekends can be tiring, but drowsiness has no place behind the wheel. Take breaks if you need to stay sharp. Let’s honor our heroes by being heroes on the road, keeping ourselves and others safe. This Memorial Day, let’s commit to driving mindfully aware, ensuring that the memories we create are joyful ones.

This 2MMM is a President’s Day message about how we have an opportunity to lead (still) by how we live our life. 2MMM: What will be said at YOUR Funeral? For this President’s Day, I was reflecting on impact and legacy. I want you to imagine YOU died. It’s now YOUR funeral. Picture it. The people you know sitting to hear those closest talk about your life. What will those coming up say about YOU? What was YOUR Impact, Your Legacy, and how you Lived your LIfe? We do it for Presidents. Let’s do it for ourselves now. Listen as I talk about these three areas. Then I have a challenge for you that may change how you go about your life this week, and maybe just maybe, for much longer. So that how you live is also how you want to be remembered. And I’ll see YOU at the next 2MMM! https://lnkd.in/gfPtDq_7

The US passed a law mandating Airlines to refund tickets in the event of cancellations, delays and lost baggages. These new risks for the Airlines are a huge opportunity for Insurance firms. I envision an insurance product sold to Airlines to cover the refunds in these events. This would help spread the risk between airlines and make the costs more predictable for the airline (regular premiums). The premiums will most likely be a percentage of tickets fares. Although costs would certainly vary by carrier, airport, season, time, airplane, etc, I imagine these would be computed and then averaged out to charge a flat rate on all tickets to a carrier, based on their historic flight data. Would airlines simply build this into the ticket price? Most certainly. But, I venture people would mind the price hike far less than the absolute relief of getting a hassle free refund when things go south. All in all, it’s a very interesting application of Society of Actuaries ‘ motto: Risk is Opportunity.
Rare win for the DOT
