Today, we honor those who have paved the way, celebrate the joy in liberation, and continue the work that still needs to be done. In honor of Juneteenth, our Black Employee Resource Group BOLD hosted Chicago Urban Historian, S. Dilla Thomas, to share the history and significance of Juneteenth and its impact on our city’s and our country’s history with all staff. We recognize Juneteenth as a paid holiday and encourage staff to take today to reflect and take time to advance their understanding of issues surrounding racial injustice and inequity.

As we celebrate Juneteenth, we must also acknowledge the invisible chains that still bind our country due to systemic racism. The legacy of slavery continues to impact the lives of Black Americans today, from disproportionately high rates of incarceration to limited access to quality education and opportunities. We must all commit to being actively anti-racist and dismantling the systems that uphold white supremacy. This means advocating for policies that promote equity and justice, supporting Black-owned businesses, and amplifying the voices of marginalized communities. As a professional in the corporate world, I recognize the importance of creating inclusive workplaces where all employees feel seen, heard, and valued. We must actively work to dismantle the barriers that prevent Black professionals from advancing in their careers and ensure that everyone has access to the same opportunities for success. Let us use this day of celebration as a reminder of the work that still needs to be done to create a truly equal and just society. We must continue to educate others, have difficult conversations, and take action.

Our national fabric is intricately woven with threads of Black creativity, resilience, an unwavering pursuit of justice, and countless contributions from diverse communities. These efforts collectively define what it truly means to advocate for a nation that upholds its promise of freedom and equality for all. "Juneteenth a hallmark of racial progress -- and at the same time, it epitomizes progress delayed and denied. "-Marie Beecham As we celebrate today, we should also be looking ahead to ensure we are uplifting the voices who aren't usually heard. As Marie mentioned in her post, "Juneteenth teaches us something about victory and struggle; finished work and unfinished work'; triumphs and trials... we celebrate every step of progress that's made along the way." - uhm mic drop?! 🎤 This can be said for a lot of our work in Canada as well. Let's keep moving forward together, not forgetting the past, but rather using the past to fuel our fire for supporting better experiences for all people. 🙌🏿🙌🏾🙌🏽 Discovering our privilege is just the beginning; what we do with it truly matters. As advocates for justice and equality, we are responsible for taking action. Whether it's amplifying Black voices, supporting Black-owned businesses, educating ourselves and others, or reading Black authors' literature, each of us plays a vital role in driving meaningful change. I recommend exploring the work of my friend Golda Lee Bruce: 'Born on an Island: Stories from a Trinidadian Girlhood.' Let's embrace diverse perspectives and celebrate the rich contributions of Black writers. What's your recommendation for this month?

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a day of liberation and reflection. On June 19, 1865, over 250,000 enslaved Black Americans in Texas finally learned they were free—more than two years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. While Juneteenth marks the end of slavery, it's important that we remember and acknowledge that the journey to freedom was long, and the fight for equality and equity continues today. A more equitable and equal society is possible through our combined efforts. By educating yourself and sharing what you learn, advocating for change, engaging with local organizations focused on social justice and helping amplify those voices. Engage with organization like the Running Industry Diversity Coalition, who are actively dismantling barriers and expanding black-ownership in the running industry. What are some other organizations that deserve our attention for their work in creating a more equitable world?
