Introducing DIVERSEcity’s new Green Guide for Newcomers! Climate change may seem like a distant or intangible problem, but it’s here. Extreme weather events, warmer temperatures, droughts, floods, poor air quality and more are affecting people and communities around the world. The potential for climate-related migration looms, and as an organization serving refugees and refugee claimants, we recognize this. Our Vision under our Strategic Plan 2024–2029 envisions “an inclusive, equitable and regenerative society that puts people and the planet first.” Although we're not an environmental organization, protecting the planet can’t be separated from the work we do; it needs to inform our approach, much like our commitments to inclusion, equity and truth and reconciliation. Throughout this guide, we have gathered tips and resources from climate experts on how we can all do our part in reducing our environmental footprint. We are so grateful to the David Suzuki Foundation’s Living Green team for your partnership, guidance and information sharing. We are eager to amplify your messages of conservation and climate justice to the people and communities we serve. #WorldEnvironmentDay (WED) During this World’s Environment Day (WED) today 5th June 2024, I am, we're reminded that “We cannot turn back the time, but we can grow forests, revive water sources, and bring back soils by restoring the Environment. "We are the generation that can make peace with land today” Additionally, World Environment Day presents a pivotal opportunity to address pressing environmental challenges such as #ClimateChangeImpacts that have greatly affected populations, including humans. Therefore, land restoration, turning desertification into wetlands or forests, and drought resilience, with people who are called, willing and the lovers of nature like myself and you out there. At local levels, in communities and in fact, all levels, environmental services are beyond comparison. We are part of the environment. Without environment, we wouldn’t be there. This means that we have a big role to protect, conserve the environment at whatever cost. United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) through #LoCAL program, is doing what it takes to respond to #Climate Change in countries like #Uganda. As part of our aim to promote ocean conservation and climate justice, we submitted a letter to the National Strategy for a Sustainable Ocean Economy through the U.S. Federal Register. The letter outlined some critical areas of ocean conservation, including Ocean Protection, Climate Resilience, Inclusive decision making and Education and Outreach. It is pertinent to note that if we must protect the planet, inclusivity and pragmatic steps must be taken. It is good to note that good outcomes have been yielded from this step. We appreciate the U.S. Department of State and the Federal Government for their commitment to the fight against climate change. A measurement of commitment is core funding and the funding allocated. it is a start but will also need the commitment from private industry.

In the vast landscape of Canada... 27 Indigenous-led projects are transforming the fight against climate change into a tapestry of community empowerment and ecological restoration. Communities are stepping up to address climate change while honouring their ancestral knowledge. From restoring peatlands to reviving traditional burning practices, these initiatives are not just about carbon capture, they are about healing the land and revitalising cultural practices. Backed by the Natural Climate Solutions Fund a $1.4 billion (CAD) investment reflects a commitment to blend traditional knowledge with modern practices. Within this funding $76.9 million (CAD) is earmarked for Indigenous-led Natural Climate Solutions, aimed at supporting First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities in their climate action efforts. As we pave the way for a sustainable future, it’s vital that the voices and wisdom of Indigenous communities are not just heard - they should lead the charge. So the question is, how can your organisation support this vital shift in the narrative?

A key #takeaway from the #GlobalNaturePositiveSummit in #Sydney #Australia was a strong message from CEO and Chairperson at the Global Environment Facility Carlos Manuel Rodriguez: “My life as a #conservationist has taught me that #GoodGovernance, strong #PublicInstitutions and #political #coherence are the missing links that have inhibited, and will continue to inhibit, our progress towards #SustainableDevelopment”. #Regulation, binding international agreements and a real call for #action is certainly needed to avoid truly perilous times on #planet #Earth caused by the current #climate & #biodiversity #crisis

Without immediate intervention, the Pacific will face not only ecological but also economic catastrophe in the next 30 to 40 years. This week, Samoa announced a national plan to protect 30% of its ocean space BY 2030, while ensuring sustainable management of the entire 120,000 square kilometer area. Imagine the global impact if every country set as ambitious a strategy as the Large Ocean State. Despite their leadership, the Pacific Islands receive only 1% of global climate funding, with even less reaching Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, who are essential to the sustainability of these efforts. We call on the international community to step up, increase their investment, and back the bold actions of Pacific Island nations like Samoa. The Blue Nature Alliance’s partnership with Samoa’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Conservation International, and the Samoa Voyaging Society to deliver their national policy framework, the Samoa Ocean Strategy, exemplifies the power of collaboration to safeguard our oceans. This is the moment for collective action.

Premiering at UVic, The film Changing Course: A River’s Journey of Reconnection explores the degradation of the Columbia River, which was once one of the most productive salmon rivers in the world. It looks at the dams and storages that eliminated wild salmon from the main stem of the river in Canada, and how this loss cut the heart out of Indigenous culture throughout the basin. Leading voices from Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities express the need for new approaches to water management and governance that are more connected to nature, account for climate change, and meaningfully include Indigenous leadership. https://ow.ly/HMkZ50QVULK
