Today, as we commemorate Anzac Day, we pause to honour the courage and sacrifice of the men and women who have served our nation in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping missions. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring spirit of our veterans and the deep gratitude we owe them. "Lest we forget" is not just a phrase—it is a solemn promise to remember the bravery and sacrifice that define our history. It is a day to reflect on what their service has meant for our freedom and our future. As we partake in dawn services, lay wreaths, and observe moments of silence, let us all commit to holding the memories of their service close to our hearts. Today, we stand united in remembrance and respect. #AnzacDay #LestWeForget #Remembrance #MilitaryHeritage #Veterans

To all peacekeepers, past and present: thank you for your service. Each year, a national ceremony is held in Ottawa at the Peacekeeping Monument on the Sunday closest to August 9, which is #NationalPeacekeepersDay. This special monument, titled “Reconciliation,” was given its name because it symbolizes two warring sides that have settled their differences peacefully. It commemorates Canada's role in international peacekeeping and members of the Canadian Armed Forces | Forces armées canadiennes, alive and lost, who have, or are currently participating in, peacekeeping missions. *Interesting fact: If you go to the monument, you’ll see broken-up concrete below the walls which represents the destruction caused by wars. The walls rise and form a point to symbolize society moving toward peace. Twelve oak trees represent the ten provinces and two territories that comprised Canada when the monument was created in 1992. Indigenous veterans have served in every major conflict Canada has been involved in since World War I, despite facing systemic barriers in civilian life. The inclusion of Indigenous voices in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) is more than symbolic; it taps into a long legacy of service. As we observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, it's vital to reflect on the journey of reconciliation, particularly within institutions like the CAF. The CAF is working towards reconciliation through efforts like acknowledging past wrongs, improving relationships with Indigenous communities, and increasing Indigenous representation within the military. The CAF is also working to incorporate Indigenous knowledge and perspectives into its operations. Is the CAF truly making a difference in improving Indigenous relations in becoming a holistic military force? What’s working, where can we do better, and how we can support Indigenous members within the CAF? What steps do you think are crucial moving forward? #NationalDayForTruthAndReconciliation #TruthAndReconciliation #IndigenousRelations #CAFReconciliation #HolisticMilitary #IndigenousRepresentation #CanadianForces #IndigenousKnowledge #RAUSI

Rethinking peacekeeping impacts: read our new research in International Affairs that shifts the focus from mission outcomes to emphasizing that peacekeeping equally reshapes the troop-contributors (and how it happens), from individual soldiers to military organisations. The article is available #OpenAccess: https://lnkd.in/dQEehQwD With Luke Patey, Rita Abrahamsen and Paul Williams. We explore new theoretical ground to capture this more comprehensive understanding of peacekeeping by introducing the concept of *global peacekeeping #assemblages* to analyze the multidirectional and multifaceted impacts of peacekeeping across space. #Peacekeeping #MilitaryStudies #CriticalTheory #Assemblages

In the 21st century, military tactics have evolved to become more effective in urban battles on the ground. However, this increased weight, firepower, and effectiveness of military units in cities seem to have a counterproductive impact. As opposed to shortening the conflict, these tactics have the opposite effect and prolong it. Unlike past wars where the destruction of cities was intended to end the conflict, modern military tactics have made it more challenging to reach a resolution. "The issue of exemption from mandatory military service for specific sectors of society, while other sections, including the Modern Orthodox, has created increasing hostility towards the ultra-Orthodox, which appear, especially now, to be evading their civic duty. The reality is approaching a boiling point and requires courageous leadership from both sides. We have been in the midst of the longest and most difficult war in Israel's history for nearly six months. A war whose end is not near, but predictions, which I hope will not come true, say that it will only get worse. This is a war in which hundreds of thousands of Israelis, reservists, left their homes with short notice and have served for close to five months, some longer. Now, most of those who have already been released are beginning to receive orders for additional reserve service. This load hits the reservists in all aspects, through their ability to support their families, Israel's economy, financial stability, and more." Read today's "View From Jerusalem" written by Leah Garber, senior vice president of JCC Association of North America and director of our Center for Israel Engagement in Jerusalem.
