Get to know Ayaka Otsuka, our Strategic Solutions Senior Coordinator! ⚡️ Q: Did you always have a desire to work in sports?   A: Yes, I did! I played multiple sports growing up. Sports have always been the center of my life. I also wanted to expand my perspectives, so I decided to move to the U.S. and work in sports in this country. Q: How’d you get your start?   A: My career started with the LA Sparks when I was in college, where I was able to learn about corporate partnerships, from sales to activations. After graduation, I started working at the Chargers as a seasonal assistant for the Corporate Partnerships department. Q: What is the most rewarding part of your job and why?   A: Not an exact part of my job but I enjoy the whole process of creating partnership solutions with internal and external teams. I can feel a little achievement and growth every time I get a project completed with coworkers. Q: What advice do you have for those trying to get into sports/starting their career in the sports industry?   A: Be bold to go with your gut! Once you find out what you would like to pursue, enjoy every step and experience to get to your goal. There are always people who support you along the way. Q: How has your heritage shaped the person you are today?   A: Born and raised in Japan, I was taught that being humble is an important aspect as a human being. You should appreciate the people that surround you and be respectful and considerate towards others. This value helps me keep growing. Q: As we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, what are some aspects of your culture that you enjoy sharing with others?   A: Japanese food and anime culture. Food and pop culture can be a tool to share good times and experiences with people who have different backgrounds and cultures. I think that is a great thing! #workinsports #strategicsolutions

"I was just not good enough to become a brand manager." 😔 As a creative person by nature, I've always dreamt of joining a large MNC as a product brand manager. During my school days, one of my wishlist was to work for Nike because I love the way they have built their brand and how they delivered their ads with such great storytelling. But reality hit... I wasn't good enough. Or at least I felt so. I never quite got the opportunity back then to work for such MNCs, let alone get close to becoming a product brand manager. Fast forward to more than 10 years later... I'm now in the branding space for employers and leaders in Asia. 🤩 While I didn't become a product brand manager for a MNC, I became an advisor for countless MNCs and leaders when it comes to employer and personal branding. And I love it! Life is funny sometimes. You don't always get what you want in the shape and form that you desire. But if you just keep putting in the work, you will end up getting something even better! 😎 And the best part? Through the work that I do now, my dear friend Melissa Tiro Park connected me with Vu Hong Nguyen who heads up HR in Nike Vietnam and I got to visit their office yesterday! ✨❇️ FROM INTERN TO CEO - Nike’s incoming CEO has an unbelievable profile!❇️✨ What internal talent promotion actually looks like! I haven't heard of any CEOs who had joined a company at an entry level job and then made it to the chair through sheer will and hard work. It’s always either through frequent switches or higher education. One thing to notice here would be that he was promoted almost every 2-3 years with substantial upgrade in designation and responsibilities, unlike many companies promoting you from Assistant manager to deputy manager after 3 years of working above and beyond (If you know you know 😉) I believe Learning, Growth and Autonomy are the key factors to hire the best talent and retain them. Good Things Take Time Nike’s incoming CEO has some once in a ages kind of profile. He joined Nike as an Intern and now he is going to be the upcoming CEO. How cool that sounds right? That’s definitely not easy—it takes a lot of patience and hard work. This shows how important it is to stick with something and never give up. But it’s not just about the person's dedication and loyalty. The company also matters. No one stays in a job for so many years unless they feel appreciated and supported.
