My old school can't keep me away! 🤭 Yesterday evening, I attended Furze Platt Senior School's Careers and Higher Education Fair 2023 to answer students' questions about getting into marketing. It was great to revisit the school and gain insights into the career aspirations of the next generation. #FurzePlatt #CareersFair #Careers #MarketingCareer #CareerDevelopment #ProfessionalDevelopment

If school were not a scam... The average person thinks that: "I'll go to school, earn a degree, and my degree will earn me a job". Because of this thought process or idea, many have experienced disappointments, when the so-called school did not give them a 'job'; and because of that say- "school is a scam" If school were not a scam, why is school not handing out jobs to people? Remember back in the days, when people from their penultimate year would have job appointments waiting for them? Why is it not so anymore? The keynote speech delivered by Barrister Abimbola Ojenike at the career fair addressed this issue keenly. Think about it this way: You go to school and you learn new concepts about how the world works- whether in your biology class, or in your accounting class. You understand how things 'are'. But you're not supposed to remain at that point. Imagine if the Wright brothers only went to school to understand how things are? Imagine if their minds did not conceive "other possibilities"? Imagine if their hands did not explore those possibilities? How would you fly from point A to B, in just a few hours? Hence, education isn't just to "hand you a job". Instead, education gives you an awareness of what is happening in society. Through education, you understand how society functions, as well as your role in it. Education is a journey of self-discovery. Are you being educated? How much of yourself have you discovered?

Conducting College Fair 'alone' IS NOT equal to providing robust career & college guidance in schools. In the last 6-7 years we have seen that the awareness & maturity of entire ecosystem to have move ahead when it comes to career guidance intervention. But the current trend (among pvt schools specially) of just doing college fair, mostly with tier 3 & below universities has no impact to help students chose a right career. While we may go slow or be far away from what western countries have done in this space, doing random stuff in the form of one-time event is not helping move things for students when it comes to their career & college decision!

After spending the day at a career fair at Godley High School, I stumbled upon a Facebook post by Mike Rowe that really made me think. It was one of those moments where everything just clicks. Mike had some tough words about the way we all too often think about education and work. He called out a chart showing how much more college grads earn compared to high school grads, labeling it misleading and a sort of propaganda for "college at any price." And you know what? He has a point. I had the chance to talk with some very bright students, all set on the college track. But after reading Mike Rowe's post, it hit me — are we, as a society, really showing them every option available for their future? Each one of these kids had college in their sights, as if that's the singular path to a successful life. Mike's words resonated, challenging this one-route-fits-all approach. It's time to ask ourselves if we're narrowing their vision by not revealing the entire landscape of possibilities. Mike's post pointed out something crucial: we're comparing apples to oranges. Not every successful person went to a four-year college. What about skilled tradespeople, entrepreneurs, or those who find their niche through community colleges or online courses? They're often doing just as well, if not better, and without the mountain of debt. So, what should we be doing differently? Well, for starters, we need to celebrate all paths to success. Whether it's through apprenticeships, trade schools, or even learning on the job, there are so many ways to make a good living and be happy in what you do. Working at Wachter has shown me the importance of practical skills in our industry. We need to do more to support schools and programs that prepare students for the real world, not just the academic one. It's about offering internships, partnering with technical schools, and maybe even starting scholarship funds for those who choose a different path. We need to broaden our perspective on what success looks like and how to get there. It's not just about pushing everyone towards a four-year degree. It's about finding what works for you, what you're passionate about, and going for it. Let's make sure we're telling that story to the next generation.

New chapter, time to spend time with my boys at the Edinburgh Science, sponsored by Baillie Gifford, The Scottish Government and The City of Edinburgh Council and Edina Trust and others. Brilliant exposure to #STEM: slime making, instrument workshops, lego challenge and more. Matti is only 3, too early to think of careers? I worked with so many businesses and so many thought that nursery was way too early to engage. Quite the opposite, this is the time to inspire young minds, they are curious and through play they learn and remember so much. According to the Climate Change Committee, they estimate up to 725,000 new jobs in low carbon solutions to be created by 2028 and there is an urgent need to recruit and train young people to deliver #netzero, also called the #netzeroworkforce. (https://lnkd.in/eDUWi2Qt) Attending careers fair in high schools is 'old school', so go further and engage in the beginning of their development, capture their imagination, invest in resource and time, and make those engagements accessible for everyone. Not a one-off, but rather on-going commitment. Plan the engagement with #essentialskills in mind. #developingyoungworkforce #futureleaders #netzeroskills #STEMskills #employmentskills #lowcarbonskills #greenskills
