Non-profits can prioritize diversity and inclusion by integrating these values into their core mission and operational strategies. This starts with leadership commitment, ensuring that diversity and inclusion are not just talked about but actively pursued at every level of the organization. Recruitment and hiring practices should consciously aim to reflect the diversity of the communities they serve, embracing varied perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences. Creating a culture of inclusivity means providing continuous education and training on diversity issues, encouraging open dialogue, and making all members feel seen, heard, and valued. Policies and practices should be regularly reviewed and updated to eliminate biases and barriers to participation. Engaging with and supporting diverse communities through outreach and partnerships also reinforces the organization’s commitment to inclusivity. By taking these steps, non-profits can build a more diverse, inclusive, and effective organization that truly reflects and enhances the communities they aim to serve.

Changes to Fair Work legislation that affect fixed-term contracting add a new curve to the ball of risk called 'funding uncertainty' that charities have to manage. But it's the ball - not just the curve - that needs attention to realise better outcomes for staff and the communities and causes our charities serve. Community Council for Australia CEO David Crosbie talks with the Institute of Community Directors Australia and the Community Advocate: 'If we want resilient and flourishing communities, governments and philanthropy need to invest in resilient #charities and #NFPs.' 'This means working more as partners for outcomes, providing more certainty in funding, and valuing charity expertise. We would like to see longer-term contracts, more trust, more authentic engagement and more flexibility, with less prescription and less micromanagement. We would also like to see funders paying the full cost of service delivery, allowing charities to invest in building the capability that supports and develops a high- performing workforce, keeps data safe and measures outcomes.' Commenting on the Fair Work changes, David said: There is “a level of uncertainty about the way charities and community organisations might apply the new (Fair Work) requirements, particularly in relation to repeat fixed-term contracts”. A key concern is how to interpret the issue of a “reasonable expectation” that funds would dry up for those organisations claiming an exception. “Of course, knowing you have a good chance of future funding does not mean you have certainty, and the risk of a charity trading insolvent is clearly reduced if staff can be employed on fixed-term contracts that match the terms of their funding streams.” He said that “charities have no issue with permanently employing people to undertake the valuable work they do in our communities” where they are able to rely on ongoing funding. https://lnkd.in/gjZgPaRF

Have you ever felt this way, looking around the #boardroom? That is, if you are lucky enough of having made it into the boardroom. Knowledge of #board vacancies remains one of the biggest barriers for underrepresented talent to get a seat at the table! Only 20% of US #boards publish their vacancies and less than 5% use an executive search firm to assist them with board recruitment. The numbers do not look any better on the other side of the Atlantic. According to the Charity Commission for England and Wales, only 10% of charitable organizations make their board vacancies public, yet, according to the same commission there are approximately 100.000 vacant trustee or board seats available. England and the US are not alone in this, this is a global issue. In a lot of countries we do not even have the data beyond #gender. Starting in 2026 all publicly traded company boards in the #europeanunion need to have 40% #genderdiversity. Rating agencies such as S&P Global have included #boardiversity as part of their #esg ratings. Serving on #nonforprofit boards, honing governance skills and taking on fiduciary responsibility is the way to get talent ready for the #boardroom and create pipelines. What needs to happen? 🔔 All organizations, whether non-profit or private will do well getting talent ready to take on governance responsibility and engage in #boardtraining opportunities. 🔔 Boards ought to conduct a board and competency audit on a regular basis to capture the diversity & board effectiveness. This is such a good article and a must read for ALL non-profit professionals. This paragraph is a great summary of what COULD happen in a non-profit. “The concept of nonprofits doing good for others is wonderful. The sacrifices and commitments of those who support them, and the results they produce, help make the world a better place. And yet most nonprofits fall short of their potential. In my experience, they succumb to an entitlement mentality and lose sight of their "why" and their accountability. As a result, nonprofits with wonderful missions staffed by (mostly) wonderful people experience counterproductive behavior, including resistance to change, silo mentality, disengagement and toxic relationships." I think Jathan Janove does a great job articulating the problem and some solutions on how to fix it. The one point I would add is that it’s HR’s role to EDUCATE employees. HR needs to make sure our employees can learn the right way to onboard, have a career conversation, submit a payment. As HR professionals we cant sit here and complain if we never taught. We cant Kvetch until we teach. It’s our job to create engaging and powerful educational materials for our organization. By using anecdotes, we can illustrate potential repercussions; otherwise, employees might believe, "It won't happen to me." Ugh. Now we need to add teacher to the list of things HR does? Yes.
