Yesterday afternoon's Sound Museums session at City University was packed full of great talks on the intersection of accessible museums and acoustics. Many thanks to Laudan for organising the event!

Thank you Andras for brillantely moderating this panel and also the speakers. Great food for the thoughts
May I share my thoughts
- I shall speak more of edutainment than Hospitality
- Missing audience. The number of people Visitng museums is not increasing and is relatively low compared to the other leisures industry
So it is important to try to reach new audiences by creating new points of accessibility and experiences especially immersive ones. The video gamers community is 3 billion people and some of them may be interested to have simultaneously a gamer and an art experience. Our video game called The Forgetter which shows works of the collection was nominated to several prize especially as the best indie game of the year 2021 by Tencent.
- Creating more immersive experiences and not only traditional contemplation exhibitions
- Going out of the walls
The words: “digital”, “ social networks” , “communicating”were not even mentioned one time is the conversation. Can you resonate with your time without these tools? All the more it will become more and more important to be accessible physically, digitally and virtually. Dslcollection is creating in 3D all its sculptures and installations. It means that we will be ready in the future to be present in all types of social, immersive, platforms like Meta or Apple.
At this moment with our Anasea project, the collection is visible on all types of digital and vr tools and it can be visited simultaneously by nearly 30 persons using their avatars. we organising guided visits from people from all over the world
- Art has became the ultimate luxury good and museums should also look on how the luxury industry is adapting to our new world ( web3.0, metaverse, video games, vr, Ar, AI and naturally hospitality.
- Staffing: What is today the part of the staff dedicated to the digital, to the communication? What about their budgets?
- on social networks museums should be actively present by giving food for the thoughts and showing a singular posture
- Business model: very few museums cover their overheads with just their activities because contrary to the music, films, books industries there are not digital revenues
- Creating museums: I love the ideas of not focussing on the building and having a great goal, concentrating on practical things, having a mission statement but also Being relevant is also abo clearly fixing metrics of success
By the way, Unfortunately I do not think that Palais de Tokyo: the biggest art space in Europe which is visited by only by something like 200.000 persons is at the moment a good example.

I would advocate for the #historyenterprise.
Yes “small” museums get short shrift at AAM. The first AAM I went to in 1995 was the same when I went later. It was really for art, a totally different discipline.
Small seems to mean whatever you want it to mean. I was a proud Field Services person and can tell you one full time and some part timers is a LARGE organization to many all-volunteer groups. Small is a comparative term not applicable to function.
I have long advocated that museums aren’t a discipline. Museums are a delivery mechanism. History museums deliver history content, whereas art, children, zoos, etc. deliver their content. Museums simply aren’t a profession. You can argue this point but long ago I stopped believing that.
The word ‘museum’ tends to be used as a catch all, but I guarantee those that work Field Services, publish history, supervise federal preservation, archaeologists, oral historians, community historians, etc. do not believe themselves part of a museum. We are all part of the history enterprise.
I support Harry’s position. I would go further and say go wherever your discipline is. Your discipline will build up your organization.

Museums serve as more than mere showcases for objects; they also act as vital drivers of the creative economy at local and regional levels. Museums are also increasingly present in the social sphere, acting as platforms for debate and discussion, tackling complex societal issues and encouraging public participation. A realistic and rather thorough set of comments/suggestions from the perspective of the vast majority of museums — although small in size, they represent a large contribution to the cultural life of our nation. Often, these are hidden jewels that add to not only rural settings but major cities where their presence shines and preserves unique perspectives.
The failure to address these inherent characteristics of small museums, may often result in tragic outcomes:

Museums big and small can be sustainable. And the first step doesn't have to be expensive or complicated. This must (or can) be the place to start.
