"..its flowing, timber structure underpins the project's ambition to be the very first purpose-built LEED Platinum theatre in the USA." 👏 Read more at Wallpaper* below
We are thrilled to lift the curtain on our design for the new home of the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival! As the first purpose-built LEED Platinum theater in the United States, HVSF’s new home will provide a transformative new cultural destination for New York and the wider performing arts community. Our design unites architecture and nature with a gently curved, timber-framed grid shell for the theater that opens directly to the site’s revitalized landscape and frames spectacular views of the highlands along the Hudson River. “Our design aims to help the company build on their strengths, with low-carbon architecture that improves daily functionality and amplifies the traditions that define their open-air performances—like the spectacular proscenium arch—as well as create new opportunities for audiences and actors to interact before and after the show,” said Founding Partner Jeanne Gang. “The ecology of the site also receives a new level of care, replacing a monocultural lawn with a biodiverse landscape that brings resiliency, wildlife, and seasonal beauty for all to enjoy.” The landscape, designed by Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects, works in concert with the theater’s architecture to encourage visitors to connect with each other in an extraordinary natural setting. restored native grasses frame a variety of verdant paths across the site, while increasing the region’s biodiversity and decreasing resource use. Our design forefronts environmental performance with a low-carbon mass-timber structure, high efficiency lighting, solar panels, rainwater reuse systems, and the remediation of contaminated soils, among others. A big thank you to our collaborators Thornton Tomasetti, Badey & Watson, Surveying & Engineering, D.P.C., Tectonic Engineering Consultants, Geologists & Land Surveyors, D.P.C., Buro Happold, Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects, Tillotson Design Associates, Threshold Acoustics, Karlssonwilker Inc., and Fisher Dachs Associates, Theatre Planning & Design for achieving a design that aims to ensure the company’s productions and the diversity of the natural world remain center stage for many seasons to come. In Andratx, Serra de Tramuntana, Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain, what was once the largest chicken farm in the island chain, has adapted and been repurposed into an art gallery and cultural center. The original chicken coops on the property were converted to an art gallery, studios for visiting artists, and a theater. The main house on the property, which is over 300 years old, has been recently restored to be rused again as a space for visitors to stay as well as an office to oversee everyday activities on the property. The primary structure has been refurbished with the original materials used to build the home, leaving them exposed for a stronger connection to the historic prevalence of the property. An important part of the project was recycling and reusing as much of the original structures and materials as possible. The designers were able to repurpose old furniture, original stone and glass found around the site, and repurpose it within the renovations. Historic preservation and adaptive reuse projects such as this, bring new life and meaning to historical sites while also making sure they are maintained in the long term. While redevelopment can be carbon intensive, it is significantly less damaging than new construction overall. The year 2024 marks 65 years since the commencement of the Sydney Opera House, an architectural marvel and symbol of Australia celebrated worldwide for its innovative design and breathtaking location. Yet, behind its iconic sails lies a complex history marked by significant project management challenges. The concept for the Sydney Opera House was born in the late 1940s when the need for a world-class performing arts venue in Sydney became evident. In 1955, an international competition was held to find a suitable design. Danish architect Jørn Utzon's revolutionary design, featuring a series of shell-like structures, was selected despite being initially deemed structurally unfeasible by some experts. This decision marked the beginning of a journey that would span over 15 years, filled with challenges, controversies, and setbacks. From a project management perspective, the Sydney Opera House is a case study in poor planning and execution. Of significancy was the lack of a clear and detailed project plan before construction began. Utzon’s design was selected based on sketches without fully developed engineering plans. This led to a situation where construction commenced before the design was fully understood, causing substantial delays and cost overruns. Originally estimated to take four years to build at a cost of AUD7m, the project ultimately took 14 years and cost AUD102m, a staggering 14x over budget. Another critical project management failure was the lack of effective stakeholder management. The project was overseen by the New South Wales government, which experienced frequent changes in leadership, leading to inconsistent support and conflicting priorities. Additionally, Utzon faced significant opposition from local architects and politicians who were skeptical of his unconventional design. The lack of alignment among stakeholders resulted in poor decision-making and ultimately led to Utzon’s resignation from the project in 1966, long before the building was completed. The management of time and resources was another major issue. The construction was divided into three phases: the podium, the roof shells, and the interior. However, because of the lack of detailed plans, each phase encountered significant challenges. The roof shells, which were the most distinctive feature of the design, required innovative construction techniques that had never been attempted before. The trial-and-error approach to solving these engineering problems contributed to further delays and cost increases. Despite these project management failures, the Sydney Opera House was finally completed in 1973 and was opened by Queen Elizabeth II. Its completion was a triumph of architectural vision and engineering innovation, however, serves as contemporary reminder of the importance of discipline delivery practices. #SydneyOperaHouse #DisciplinedDelivery #History
