What’s next for the Theatre Green Book? The one-of-a-kind guide continues to lead the way for the cultural sector’s route to net zero, and Buro Happold continues to work closely with the group to produce an updated edition planned for this summer.
Setting out common standards for sustainable theatre across all areas of practice and operation, the 2021 award winning ‘Theatre Green Book,’ which Buro Happold co-authored and provided sustainability expertise across, is teaming up with three national theatres to help drive towards net zero across the industry.
The Theatre Green Book’s ambition is to achieve baseline standards across buildings, operations and productions by the end of 2026. To help push this forward, several of the UK’s leading theatre organisations have come together to form a steering group to give the project more stability and resources - drawing on expertise from around the sector is what makes the guide a success.
As part of the steering group, Buro Happold worked with National Theatres, with membership organisations including the Association of British Theatre Technicians, the Society of London Theatre/UK Theatre, authors Paddy Dillon and Lisa Burger, and the Theatres Trust.
A second edition of the Theatre Green Book, created by the steering group, will be available from summer 2024. This edition will contain a ‘production calculator’ that can provide a basic carbon calculation for the principal elements of any show, along with a building survey tool, designed to help theatres create basic sustainability plans for buildings and support carbon calculation for building energy.
The new edition will continue to draw on best practice from the former. With the original guide having already been translated into 10 languages, its influence is only growing – in the UK, and beyond.
