What's on your reading list this weekend? Me? The latest report from CAPE - Climate Adapted Pathways for Education It's titled, Implementing Climate Change Education in Schools: Constructive Hope in Action report Scrolling through it, earlier this week, I could see immediately how it differs from other education and academic reports. For one, the inclusion of music lyrics. Music has always been a powerful force in my life. Tide Lines, whose lyrics you'll read in this report, were introduced to me by Heena Dave - the joy and hope-filled co-founder of CAPE. When I first listened to Tide Lines, I popped in my headphones, headed on a long walk where I live and was instantly transported home, though I couldn't work out why. Sure, I had fallen in love with Scotland on my solo travels there. But there was something else. Perhaps it was the band's appreciation for the power of nature. Perhaps it was because, whilst listening, all I could think about was a chat with my colleague, Heena, as we had walked through a London park together. She spoke of her hopes for this incredible climate change education work she had started on the side of her job. She was filled with a purposeful energy I greatly admired. It's not always easy to follow your passions, your values, and make a difference in the world. I had met someone who was and is doing that very thing. Each time I listen to the hope and joy-filled sound of this Scottish band, I'll always think of Heena, and I'll be reminded of the power we each have to make change in the world. "The Emissions Cap Framework released in December is a positive start, but everyone agrees that it needs to be improved. We have until Monday February 5th, end of day, to share our thoughts with Environment Canada. (I apologize for the lateness, just sign once you read if no time) This is our chance to make sure loopholes are closed and the policy is implemented without delay. Send in a submission to make sure the oil and gas industry does its part in the transition to a fossil-free future!  We're sharing the submission as a one-click action, so you can contribute to the public consultation yourself. Send it as is, or change it to your own words. Either way, it will be sent in as part of the public consultation with one click.  Not sure you understand all the ins and outs of an emissions cap? We've set out six recommendations that are clear and easy to understand: Emissions cap targets must be more ambitious to align with the International Energy Agency’s recommendations and Canada’s goal of achieving net-zero by 2050. Loopholes such as carbon capture and storage and carbon offsets should not be relied on as pathways to emissions reduction.  The framework must better address indirect GHG emissions from the oil and gas sector. All emissions from the production and the use of oil and gas should be included in the emissions cap, including pipelines, refineries and LNG export facilities. Accountability, including penalties and fines, need to be strong enough to ensure compliance from the industry.  Regulations must be implemented without more delays - to be released this spring and implemented by the beginning of 2025.  The Government must put Canadians and a safe future for our children first. Recent polls have found a majority of Canadians support a strong emissions cap, and they expect the oil and gas industry to do their part to tackle the climate crisis."
