Paid family leave programs have positive impacts on a family's economic security and parent-child health. In 2023, a bipartisan group in Pennsylvania introduced H.B. 181 to provide up to 20 weeks of paid family and medical leave. The program would benefit families with infants by reducing healthcare and childcare costs, while also increasing household income. The state would benefit from increased tax revenue and decreased spending on healthcare and infant care. The estimated ratio of societal benefits to costs is 18 to 1. Child care should not be a crippling expense for over 95% of Americans. Our childcare system needs a comprehensive overhaul, covering ages 0-17. While many recognize the significant cost of daycare in the early years, the expenses continue into K-12 with afterschool and school break care. The average parent spends between $3,000 and $5,000 per child each summer for care.
