As someone who has a small child and would like to have a second, this truly terrifies me. And I have the privilege and resources to survive this. Many women, especially BIPOC women do not. Not only would we see an increase in maternal mortality and violence against minorities, but the gender and racial wealth gaps would only widen. As Coalition member Pregnant Then Screwed says: “We are way behind other countries when it comes to parental leave - poor pay means many families start their life in a black hole of debt from which they struggle to recover. Meanwhile, a lack of high-quality flexible working makes it impossible for many to fulfil their potential whilst being a parent. Right now, the future isn’t bright for so many new families who are desperate to hear something hopeful during this election campaign.” Joeli Brearley Voters recognise the challenge of modern parenting and they remain concerned about the affordability and availability of early years and childcare places. But concerns are particularly high amongst parents with children under 5, parents of children with SEND, and Black and Asian families. Our annual Pulse Check survey reveals the public strongly support policies that would give parents more choice in how they balance parenting with work, and they see increasing government funding and boosting staff as a solution to increasing the availability of places for children. If ever there was a time to really make a stink, then 2024 is it. Next year is a general election and right now MPs and their policy advisors are figuring out what to put in their manifesto. We need to make absolutely sure that top of their list is: childcare, parental leave, flexible working and legislation that will reduce pregnancy and maternity discrimination. Unless we make a noise so thunderous it echoes down the Parliamentary corridors, we will be swept under the carpet, AGAIN; and will have to wait another 5 years before we have the chance for another quid pro quo - give us what we want and we will give you our vote. So, this is what we need you to do: Please get as many people as you can to fill in our 2024 State of The Nation survey so we can make sure the voices of parents are heard. Data is power. Data gets press attention. Data is what our Parliamentary allies will use to push for the changes we need. Right now we only have about a quarter of the number or responses we need to make our data nationally representative so when we say every single one of you can make a difference we really mean it. Like so many women, I have experienced significant issues in the workplace because of being a mum. Issues that continue way beyond maternity 'leave', and have a huge impact on work and family life and health and wellbeing. From contracts not renewed to sexist remarks about baby weight; from flexible working requests denied to returning to half a job; from promotion not available on part-time hours to comments about working mums being unreliable. Pregnant Then Screwed does such important work to understand the extent of this and tackle it. The 4 things I’m thinking about non-stop after the Moms First Summit yesterday: 🤰🏿 The black maternal health crisis Yes, crisis. The stats are terrifying (black women are 3X more likely to die in childbirth than white women). And as many panelists pointed out, we have to talk about the uncomfortable reason why: racism. 👶🏼 Childcare is an economic issue People cannot work without affordable, quality childcare. If we want to get more people to work, we need to provide (or help provide) this public good. Otherwise, the economy suffers significantly. 💸 “Middlers” People who are above the poverty line and make too much money to receive government benefits - but make too little to provide a decent standard of living. These “middlers” (as one panelist called them) are often single mothers. 🤳 Screen time - and social media - for kids One panelist said we need to keep all smartphones out of kids’ hands until they are 16. All of the research shows that the proliferation of screens (and social media) in 2012 ushered in a scary time for pre-teens and teens that we don’t even fully understand yet. I'll be posting more about the Moms First summit over the coming weeks - so much to digest from this incredible event!

Care is a Global Issue! Soaring childcare costs impact women globally, leading to significant economic consequences. According to Bloomberg Economics, leaving women out of the workforce results in a high economic price. Global GDP could be 10% higher if female labor participation equaled men's. In the US, $237 billion vanishes annually due to women scaling back workloads for childcare, and in the EU, it's around €242 billion ($255 billion). https://lnkd.in/grX5rQmS
