As education professionals, we all want what's best for our students. But a critical hurdle remains with third-grade reading proficiency. The article highlights a decline in Indiana's third-grade reading pass rates, dropping nearly 10% in a decade. This isn't an isolated case. The rise of "social promotion" - passing students to the next grade regardless of reading ability - is linked to these declining scores. Studies in states like Florida and Alabama show the opposite: strong reading improvement with stricter standards. Ending social promotion may seem harsh, but the benefits are clear. Early intervention and targeted support for struggling readers can have a profound impact on their future success. Educators, parents, and lawmakers must work together to prioritize third-grade reading proficiency. #Education #Reading

In recent years partially due to the pandemic, school districts in Pennsylvania have found difficulty filling new positions. According to a study conducted by Penn State’s Center For Education Evaluation and Policy Analysis titled “Exacerbating the Shortage of Teachers: Rising Teacher Attrition in Pennsylvania from 2014 to 2023,” between the 2022 and 2023, Centre County had a teacher attrition rate of 9.3. The rate at which teachers leave a school district varies in surrounding counties, like Clinton County with an attrition rate of 10.1 and Clearfield County, which has a rate of 6.8, according to the analysis. Penn State University Park sends their student teachers to “a variety of schools and school districts within a 70 mile radius of University Park,” according to Penn State’s College of Education website. Despite the varying levels of teacher attrition in Centre County and its surrounding counties, student teachers are placed in districts depending on the supervisor they are randomly assigned to, according to Bryce Ervin.

Results of the poll are in. The question to teachers and SLT members was: How many of the complaints from parents you get, as a percentage, are aggressive? 41% of the 144 respondents say that more than half the complaints they receive are aggressive. I think the result is shocking and adds to my own anecdotal evidence that the relationship between schools and parents is becoming increasingly conflictual. I'd like the DfE to step in a lay down a marker: communication with teachers must always be respectful no matter how agitated, frustrated or indeed justified your complaint. With a crisis in recruitment and retention of teachers threatening nearly every school in the UK, this is a situation that needs addressing seriously.

Teacher turnover not only impacts students in classrooms with a new teacher. It even impacts the teachers who stay. In a 2013 study, researchers analyzed 850,000 student observations to understand the effects of teacher turnover on student outcomes. The observations were done over eight years, of 4th and 5th graders in New York City. (see link in comments) Unsurprisingly, the effects were not good — with math scores dropping by up to 10.2 percent of a standard deviation. In ELA, the decrease was up to 6 percent. But, somewhat surprisingly, teacher turnover even impacted students whose teachers stayed! When you think about it, it’s not hard to imagine that additional responsibilities and stress are likely falling on the shoulders of these teachers. Leading to more burnout and attrition.

Excited to share part of my story with @WSJ on teacher turnover. Such an important issue for us to solve and it starts with hearing teachers, acting to tangibly support them, and providing resources to schools to help teach all students. https://lnkd.in/gw_gpfgM

Few parents know that special education timelines are governed by federal and state laws, and having worked in schools, I also understand how difficult it can be for schools to adhere to these timelines. https://lnkd.in/d_PybJi8 #specialeducation #lep #specialneedsadvocate #specialeducationalneeds #specialneedsparenting #specialeducationteacher #schoolpsychologist
