"Foreign investors looking at Indonesia’s prospects under President-elect Prabowo Subianto should not be deterred by his image as a hyper-nationalist leader who could be bad for business with the rest of the world because of placing security interests over economic interests. He is certainly a nationalist, one who stands a political notch or two above others who have ruled Indonesia since its democratisation after the Suharto years. However, the Prabowo administration could be surprisingly business-friendly, including towards international investors." Sounds about right. I think Prabowo will be ' business-friendly' Indonesian style.

The World Bank has revised its forecast for Indonesia's economic growth, painting a positive picture with an upward revision to an average of 5.1% annual growth from 2024 to 2026 (previously projected at 4.9%). This revision is attributed to factors like increased government expenditure, rising business investment, and continued consumer demand stability. BI projects similar growth, in a range between 4.7 - 5.5% in 2024, supported by domestic demand and infrastructure investment. Indonesia’s business outlook is strong according to the Indonesia Business Sentiment 2023 Report based on a joint survey between CPA Australia and the ASEAN Federation of Accountants (AFA) with support from Ikatan Akuntan Indonesia (IAI). It augurs well that 60 per cent of Indonesian businesses experienced an increase in profitability from ASEAN’s economic integration with Indonesia’s network of free trade agreements having a positive impact on many Indonesian business. It is recommended that Indonesian businesses continue to invest into digital transformation, technology and innovation to improve efficiency and build on their competitive advantages. Focus now shifts to his cabinet and governing strategy. Already there are murmurs of concern as finance minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati is unlikely to continue in the new government. https://lnkd.in/gx7uHChp Her successor will have big shoes to fill. Indrawati is widely credited for guiding President Jokowi's strong infrastructure drive without sacrificing fiscal discipline. Investors will watch her replacement keenly, not least because of the populist spending announced in the run-up to 14 Feb elections and on the campaign trail. A departure from Indrawati's prudent fiscal management strategies will not only impact investor sentiment negatively and raise borrowing costs, but also be detrimental to Prabowo's promise of lifting Indonesia's growth to 8% from 5% over the medium-term. Pulling Indonesia out of the 5% growth trap will take more than a few fiscal handouts or rate cuts from the central bank. Addressing structural bottlenecks that limit potential growth, such as productivity levels that have consistently lagged other major ASEAN economies, will be essential. To enter the 8% growth trajectory, the new government will have to demonstrate a strong commitment to raising manufacturing and labour productivity through reforms and continued infrastructure spending. This is clearly a tall order and much will depend on Prabowo's choice of ministers, including his ability to identify a capable successor to Indrawati. We advise tempering your expectations. In his comments to Asia Decoded, IMA Asia's Richard Martin cautioned against expecting too much on reforms from Prabowo's cabinet, noting it "will be inclined to protect the interests of the elite rather than pushing uncomfortable reforms." https://lnkd.in/gPneE_h2
