We all know how hard it can be for young people, but for some it is disproportionately more difficult. Care leavers in particular are at a massive disadvantage. They can go from being supported to being out on their own, on a massively reduced income, and without the family support that so many young people take for granted and rely on. There are many shocking statistics around care leavers, but one of them highlights the difficulties that they face. 20% of care leavers will go on to spend at least some time in prison, whereas only 6% will go on to university. Of course, not everything is about university or formal education, but the difference in trajectory, and the increased likelihood of hardship is stark. We want to change their future. Can you help us? Call Leanne Macpherson, Head of Programmes, on 01743 295900, or email [email protected] if you would like to be involved.

URGENT! – Congress is making decisions RIGHT NOW about funding for child care and early learning programs like Head Start, CCDBG, and PDG B-5. Congress must protect and prioritize this funding for working families, young children and employers! #ChildCareChampion

Anyone in #Leeds who has a #SEND child of any age needs to take notice of this post-16 transport consultation and input if you think it may impact/be needed by your child once they reach the age of 16 (especially if they are much younger than this currently). Please share. The post-16 transport consultation closes on 23 July. You can access the survey via this link: https://lnkd.in/dwpxR-MB There are also consultation events taking place as shown on the image below. Background: Leeds Council is currently consulting on how to revise their post-16 transport provision. Transport for SEND children who need it, and are of compulsory school age, is governed by statutory requirements. Transport for post-16 SEND learners is not covered by such extensive statutory protection. It is therefore vulnerable to cuts and changes if the council runs out of money (which most councils are currently very short of!) There are going to be changes made, and there are a number of different proposals on the table. Therefore if you want your views, and the needs of your child/children to be represented in this consultation, then you need to act by 23 July. Image description: poster entitled have your say - with QR code link to post-16 consultation survey and details of virtual consultations taking place on 18 July (10-11.30 and 18.00-19.30). Zoom login details on the poster, please comment if you need those and I will type out in reply.

Are you interested in learning more about child care and early education licensing? This literature synthesis from our research partner Child Trends describes components of licensing and provides a comprehensive review of research about licensing. Four main questions guided the literature review: 1. Which aspects of CCEE licensing are addressed in the literature? 2. What are the research findings about aspects of licensing? 3. What outcomes are addressed in the licensing literature (e.g., provider quality, children’s health), and what is the research evidence about the relationship between aspects of licensing and outcomes? 4. What are the gaps in research about licensing? https://lnkd.in/gFucFtTz #ECE #ChildCare

Struck by the amount of posts today from parents re A level results; many celebrating success, others advocating for clearing places on their children’s behalf. Thinking of care leavers who have been failed by their corporate parent. Many will be have opened their results alone in hostels/bedsits/caravans, with no one to champion their wins or console them in their fears about the future. Many won’t have the option of resitting a year due to lack of financial support, or not knowing where they will live in a few months time. Despite having finished school in the toughest of circumstances (such as living with adults fresh out of prison/no electricity as I did in care), their tenacity may not be reflected in their grades. In case you didn’t know, any child born on or after 15 August 2008 going into care tonight could be placed in care-less accommodation; that means they could spend the next 2 years living without 24/7 adult supervision, protection from corporal punishment or being homed away from vulnerable adults. If you’re reading this at a loss, there are a few things you can do: 1. Support @article_39’s #KeepCaringto18 campaign (more info here (https://lnkd.in/gVDtdSkD 2. If you work at a university, advocate for care leavers. Ask what leaders are doing to support them. 3. Write to your MP demanding that 16/17 year olds in care receive just that - care.
