The tech event #CES2024 definitely stole the spotlight in the first half of January 2024. Amazing things were unveiled at CES 2024, from mind-blowing advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics to futuristic smart home tech and mind-bending virtual reality experiences. As we step into 2024, I'd like to celebrate the amazing growth in tech, but still remember the tough times many are facing around the world. We're seeing some really cool stuff happening in tech. AI is changing the game, and it's exciting to think about all the new possibilities. But as we cheer for these advances, let's not forget about the people living in places like Ukraine, Israel, Gaza, Yemen, Sudan, Ethiopia, Congo, Haiti, and so many others (too many!) who have been/are going through very tough times. This year, let's celebrate our tech wins but also remember to be kind and thoughtful. Let's use our smarts and hearts to make the world a better place for everyone. An important lesson from #CES2024, one of the world's largest tech conferences: Innovation opportunities exist at the intersection of basic needs and technology. Take two companies at CES focused on the issue of water scarcity: AirFarm and WaterCube 100. AirFarm (https://lnkd.in/gGdbcD7S) an inflatable farm operating without water infrastructure, using 99% and 90% less water than conventional and vertical farming, respectively. Their system is set up in just half a day and converts moisture from the air into water in real-time. WaterCube 100 (https://lnkd.in/gGVPnVWq, https://lnkd.in/gTQKkx27) is an appliance that generates over 100 gallons of fresh water daily, using Renewable Water from Air (RWA) technology. It aims to reduce water scarcity and dependence on municipal water grids or wells. When designed with the purpose of improving societal or planetary wellbeing, technology can become a vital component in creating a sustainable future. But just as importantly, technology alone is not a panacea for the 21st century's existential threats: it needs to be accompanied by policies and business models for the greatest benefit. This requires governments and businesses to ask some hard questions, like: How affordable is this technology? Can it be deployed in lower-income nations, where it is most needed? What enabling policies are needed to make this technology scalable? Can it be made using local materials? Effective and appropriate technology is a multistakeholder endeavour.
