BREAKING #GetShedsDown news 📢 After an extensive selection process, firms Arup US and Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU) have been selected to deliver six new better-looking, more cost-efficient designs for scaffolding/construction sheds and pedestrian safety equipment. The redesigns will include four options for sidewalk-level sheds and two options for non-sidewalk-level pedestrian safety equipment, such as mesh fiber wraps or netting. Those six designs will be publicly released by the city to give every contractor the ability to build and use them, further driving down costs through competition. As the demand for larger and taller modular timber structures in cross-laminated timber (CLT) rises, ensuring robust horizontal connections between modules becomes imperative for structural integrity. However, this can inadvertently lead to acoustic contact bridges. In anticipation of an upcoming project in the Netherlands, CDM Stravitec conducted a comprehensive test arrangement using two 3D modules in CLT to explore different methods of interconnection. LAND 702 - Landscape Architecture Studio III -Advanced Winter 2024, Instructor: Enrica Dall'Ara "Fuelling Down" I am really happy to share the 2nd phase of my studio project Fuelling Down which discusses about the cultural, social and futuristic approach to the energy landscape of Calgary through the Gas stations. Being one of the prime cities in Alberta, Calgary is a really big part of the energy landscape of Alberta. The gas stations in it are the stimuli points for the movement and speed of the city. Through this project at this stage I am trying to envision these gas stations as communal, cultural as well as heritage spaces in the future. As we are running towards a future which is so electric power based, maybe we will end up not using these gas station spaces at all due to the decline in fossil fueled vehicles, Instead EVs will be the new definition for speed and movement. I have tried to think about that scenario and what we can make of these stations as they have great potential to become a communal space, or a cultural heritage or a reflection to the history of the oil landscape in Alberta.... This was our 2nd phase of analysis through which I tried to explore these regimes. *APPEAL ALLOWED* We at Avalon are delighted to have secured consent at appeal for enhancements to Sideshore’s fantastic offer on Exmouth seafront! The proposals for a new multi-use hub building for Sideshore CIC provides purpose-built accommodation for the site operations, meeting space for use by local community groups and additional ancillary space to support events on the adjacent green space. The consent also secures WC facilities in a modest extension to the existing buildings all powered by renewable energy. The application was refused at Planning Committee against officer recommendation for approval in February 2023 on matters relating to impact on the character and appearance of the area. We submitted an appeal via the written representations route in June 2023 and are pleased to see that The Inspector fully agreed with our case that the proposed innovative, high quality and low impact design developed by HiltonBarnfield Architects was an appropriate response to the character of the site, it’s landscape setting and the constraints and opportunities it affords. The proposals have been underpinned by an ethos of delivering the lowest impact building as possible and incorporates reclaimed materials and “wildlife walls” into its façade while utilising light weight ground screw foundation design to minimise the need to break ground.
