Hello LinkedIn connections, my name is Sam, I wanted to take a moment to re-introduce myself. For the last 5+ years I worked in the cannabis industry as a director of sales and operations. In March, I was laid off due to a corporate restructuring. In reflection I've have found that while stressed and saddened that I was released from a position I loved, I am incredibly lucky that it happened when it did. Instead of running around cursing the dutchie gods on 4/20 I was holding my grandma’s hand on what would be her last full day on this earth. I have slept, hiked, organized, read, visited friends – you name it, I’ve done it. I am now ready to jump back into the workforce, which has led me here. I worked with one company for four years until our acquisition and my eventual layoff. I managed through days of struggle and low revenue, to the good ole’ post covid days where speed, flexibility, and a bit of ingenuity paid tenfold. I started with one business and eventually ran seven in two states in an MSO. I’ve done everything from sales, purchasing, compliance, HR, security, community outreach… all of it. One of my big wins (of many): When two home grown salespeople became managers and bought their first house. When a third stated proudly that she was no longer living check-to-check. There’s no bigger test as a leader than the proven ability to bring others to the top with you.  Obviously, there have been high sales, passed audits, fantastic retention (something I’m very proud of), but there was a lot not measured in a KPI that made it incredibly fulfilling. A few of my strengths: Sales is not a dirty word to me – my motto: If it don’t make dollars, it don’t make sense. You can engrain and build a sales culture without feeling sleezy if you give the team the WHY, AND they see the benefit of those sales! Hospitality – I worked at Hakkasan for years, I understand an elevated experience. I set the expectation from the top down, act the part, and demand a level of professionalism that everyone can be proud of. Fostering talent & building a bench – Allow people to prove themselves, invest in them (financially and with opportunity), and you’ll have a team player for life. One of my best compliments came from an employee returning from a family gathering, he said “everyone commented on how much I’ve changed and how well I carry myself now, that’s because of you.” An area of opportunity (of many, of course): Accountability can seem adversarial without the foundation of earned mutual respect. I won’t sugarcoat feedback or poor results, especially when the opportunity for improvement is on the other side. But I could do better in letting you know it’s not a YOU problem. This week I graduated from Sales Platoon. This marks a significant milestone in my professional development, largely thanks to the incredible learning journey I've embarked on. Despite the recent uptick in volume, I've yet to speak with a Sr. Executive/Owner who has the mindset that the market is "fixed", or going to be easier. There are still tons of challenges ahead for companies that are not sitting on a cash position/expense control in the markets ahead. Especially with the amount of money a company has to hold against volume potentially going up. The later of that last sentence will be a straw for some companies. This market is going to test sales leadership to the limits. For many, the natural inclination will be to grind on every component of the franchise. Squeezing every decision, creating a high stress and fear of failure environment for the revenue producers/growers. That approach, while on paper makes sense because if everyone feels the pressure they in theory will be more accountable to perform, will be the wrong approach. In retail, originators who grow volume and leaders who grow access to more volume are in a sense athletes. They are playing a game that has winners and losers. They have to show up every day if they want to beat the competition. They have to make daily decisions that can determine success or failure. And as any great athlete will tell you, nobody performs their best when they are holding on too tight. No team has great chemistry when the entire locker room is stressed to the max. The teams that win, are the teams that understand the responsibility they have, but are free to play loose and without fear of failure. What's going to happen in the market is going to happen. If you want to come out on top, while the ownership group can be as stressed as they want to be, the last thing they want is a sales team not performing/executing at their best. So while the ownership group has to potentially play it tighter than usual, they have to also exude confidence and freedom to win. Those two approaches are counter to one another, and will assure the very best leadership groups rise to the top. It's been cool to watch the loanDepot leadership group pivot to a more aggressive posture in terms of growth. It will lead to more wins as the year progresses.
