The future indeed looks bright if the curiosity of students from Talcott Mountain Science Center & Academy is any indication. The kids had questions galore as they toured the office and engaged with our staff. We'd happily welcome them back any time!

Day 9 Another great day at the Arkansas Summer Research Institute! Today we had visiting professors from various institutions. We did machine learning with Dr. Afsana Mou, building a better LinkedIn profile with Dr. Holden & Dr. Krakowiak, building your resume with Julie Larue, and a wonderful panel for research and Grad school opportunities moderated by Dr. Krakowiak. What is one thing you learned during the panel discussion today? One thing I learned during the panel discussion is to have boundaries and a work-life balance. #ArkansasSRI

The potential that science holds to develop future technologies in various industries, was one of the main focus areas that was discussed at the Cape Town Science Centre, as part of National Science Week activities. The aim of the programme is to bring science closer to learners and to the general public. It also encourages critical conversations about the value of science among ordinary people, especially the youth. The theme for the 2024 National Science Week was; "Living in a high-tech world: should we be concerned?" https://lnkd.in/dCz5zfxA

How do we ensure that our research speaks to both academic peers and the communities it affects? 💭 During a panel discussion at Old Dominion University last week, I had the opportunity to share insights on the necessity of integrating tangible community benefits into the broader impacts of scientific research. In a conversation with a group of oceanographers, I emphasized how these benefits are essential to ensuring our work has meaningful, lasting effects beyond academic circles. It felt empowering to suggest that our work can do more than inform—it can engage and uplift the communities around us. The conversation built from there, focusing on the value of meeting people where they are and the role of academics as responsible stewards of data. One key takeaway: creating meaningful impacts with ocean observatory data starts with listening and fostering two-way communication. Grateful for the chance to be part of such an important discussion and to hear from others on how we can continue to bridge the gap between research and real-world outcomes!

Milwaukee: your lab coats are machine-washable. No need to dry-clean ahead of Escuela Verde's #communitysciencefair on March 15. For those tuning in late, I organized three #sciencefairs for grown-ups in the '00s as Cedar Block. Joey Zocher, PhD and R. Justin Hougham, Ph.D. asked if we could reboot them for an annual event with community members AND EV students in 2016. They turned my quirky idea into something I couldn't have imagined. #ScienceStrikesBack is beautiful, brilliant and substantive in singularly inspiring ways. You can and should attend. The video at the link below shows it in action. These kids -- I think the world is gonna be alright. Consider participating, as it's open to anyone who misses doing science fairs or never got an opportunity. I participated as a civilian in February 2020, winning 1st place in the Technology division for building a functional time machine. My life has more space than it has in recent years so I submitted an application this morning for a project that considers the biology of artificial intelligence. Okay I'm done. This is simply my favorite experience in town. It makes me happier than a Bucks game or the Art Museum. "Science Strikes Back (SSB) aims to encourage community members in #Milwaukee to critically analyze #environmentalissues and solve problems in their communities. Through the development of collaborative relationships between students, educators, and content specialists from locally-based organizations, Science Strikes Back will produce a strong network in Milwaukee for continued #environmentaleducation and #naturalresourcestewardship. Inspiring an interest in our #GreatLakeswatershed, supporting #studentinquiry in #communityissues and advancing dialogue around #environmentaljustice all are examples of how SSB hopes to support science in Milwaukee." https://lnkd.in/dgKY_xgd

In this episode, Derek interviews Emily Affolter, who teaches in Prescott College's PhD program in sustainability education, about culturally responsive teaching, emphasizing equity in education. Emily shares how she and her colleagues build trust with diverse students, foster equity even in large lectures, and decolonize disciplines like marine biology. Her program attracts professionals, some already holding PhDs, who seek to integrate social and environmental justice into their teaching and leadership. Culturally responsive teaching, as Emily describes it, involves reimagining classes to prioritize equity. Listen now. https://ow.ly/rBAB50T3pcl

This is what I love about materials science. Anything and everything can be a question to solve, and there's always a new way to look at all of the matter around us- from bug legs to new classes of semiconductors. Providing tools to young students to explore the world around them is how it all starts. #materialsscience #materialsengineering
“We didn’t give the students instructions, just empowered them to solve problems," said Carl Thrasher, a DMSE grad student who spearheaded the science discovery program EMERGE.

A wonderful collaboration with Konstantina Katti ! Biomaster is the first in a complete series of chatbots that we have started creating for educators of all specialties, which can offer support in the following ways. 1. Developing hands-on lessons based in various educational methods: The chatbot can assist educators in creating interactive lessons that encourage students to actively participate and engage with the material, fostering a more profound understanding of concepts. 2. Gamifying concepts for deeper engagement: By introducing elements of gamification, the chatbot helps make lessons more engaging and enjoyable for students, increasing their motivation to learn. 3. Aligning lessons with educational standards: It ensures that the content teachers deliver aligns with educational guidelines, making it easier for educators to meet curriculum requirements. 4. Customizing lessons to students' learning styles: The chatbot can adapt lessons to suit the diverse learning preferences of students, personalizing the educational experience and catering to individual needs. This approach supports teachers by saving time, improving lesson quality, and enhancing student engagement through interactive, customized learning experiences.
BioMaster Sneak Peak 1: With its focus on differentiated learning, real-world problem-solving, and a sprinkle of humor, BioMaster (https://lnkd.in/daspiwQg) makes complex biological concepts more accessible and fun! As a sneak peek into BioMaster’s capabilities, here’s a lesson plan I recently created for a 7th-grade biology class: Are Zombies living organisms? As the presentation of Biomaster at the 10th International Conference of Educational Innovation approaches, IOANNIS ANAPLIOTIS and I will be sharing more on how it supports teachers in: 🔬 Developing hands-on, inquiry-based lessons 🎮 Gamifying biology concepts for deeper student engagement 📚 Aligning with educational standards 👩🏫 Customizing lessons to students' learning styles Looking forward to connecting with fellow educators and innovators in Larissa on October 18th-20th!
