I value how this show innovatively highlights the physical relationship to interior design.

I recently read about the Museum of Emotions, a groundbreaking competition organized by the World Architecture Community. It provides a unique platform for architects, academics, and students worldwide to collaborate, share ideas, and push the boundaries of architectural expression globally. Theme for its 3rd (2023) edition- Using architecture as a tool to bring out different emotions. They are asked to design a museum that includes two separate exhibition halls that bring out contrasting emotions – one inducing negative emotions, and the other inducing positive emotions. Here are my key takeaways from each winner in its 3rd (2023) edition - 1st Prize: "Memorial of the Tree" by South China University of Technology - "Memorial of the Tree" intricately explores life and death through a strategically positioned skylight, visually connecting two worlds. - The design's impact is highlighted by the strong influence of visual storytelling in architectural innovation. - Beyond showcasing the creators' innovative spirit, it also serves as a reminder of the emotional depth architecture can evoke. 2nd Prize: "Living Things" from Chile - "Living Things" explores nature's emotional impact, contrasting a bleak landscape with a lively rainforest. - Going beyond aesthetics, this design demonstrates the potential of light and spatial dynamics in architecture. - The interplay of light and space not only shapes the environment but also tells a compelling story that deeply connects emotionally with those who experience it. 3rd Prize: "The Inverse" from Malaysia - "The Inverse" takes an experimental approach to scale, urging visitors to confront their smallness in a vast space. - The intentional play with scale encourages one to reflect on the significance of spatial perception. - This design invites individuals not just to observe but actively engage, offering a thought-provoking and immersive architectural experience. The common thread among the Museum of Emotions' 2023 winners lies in their ability to transcend architectural boundaries by using innovative design elements and proving just how impactful architectural elements are when it comes to evoking strong human emotions. These designs inspire us, people of the residential realty sector, to see architecture beyond physical structures but as a canvas of imagination. GRAND RAPIDS ART MUSEUM GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, USA (1983) https://lnkd.in/esSAhwYC This proposal revitalizes the city's downtown area by reusing a distinguished, but now vacant, former government building and by adapting a number of abandoned or underused neighboring structures for additional cultural functions. The main 1908 Beaux-Arts building is upgraded to meet codes and programmatic requirements. A relocation of the entrance from the closed side of the U-shaped building to the open court-yard establishes a direct physical relationship between the museum and its surroundings while creating a single, unified entrance. Covering the court-yard, a translucent inclined plane of stairs has an opening at its center that leads to the Grand Foyer which is a shared space for the different departments. Water descends slowly and evenly from the top of the stairway along a channel carved into the plane, leaving a clear pedestrian path for those walking up the stairs. This water is, in fact, the very water used for the air-conditioning system. In this way, the need for an unsightly cooling tower has been eliminated and this silent cascade becomes the focal point of the city's newest public space. Bakar BioEnginuity Hub wins 2023 Modernism in America Award from Docomomo US. “Creative design and preservation go hand in hand, as evidenced by this year’s Awardees,” said Docomomo US Executive Director Liz Waytkus. Demolition or insensitive alterations are too often the easy way out. In the case of Bakar BioEnginuity Hub, formerly the Berkeley University Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive, community pressure helped delay demolition long enough for a creative vision to emerge. A little imagination and strong partnership were all it took to transform this long vacant Brutalist building into a modernized, seismically sound, and operationally carbon neutral space for scientific innovation. What can building materials and renovation processes tell us about museums? Lena Stina Andersson's new doctoral thesis studies architectural and material change processes at national museums in northern Europe. It also contributes with a historical study of the museum as a renovation and construction site and the relations between them. The thesis is structured around three case studies: Museuminsel/Pergamon Museum in #Berlin, Nationalmuseum, Sweden, #Stockholm, and Victoria and Albert Museum in #London. Each architectural and material renovation project brings together actors from the construction industry, museum institutions, and global actors. By exploring museum practices, international agreements, commodity chains, local development plans and ambitions, and hidden labour and workers, the research aims to clarify the reasons why national museum buildings are changing - processes that take place over decades and even centuries and are motivated by a range of global, national and local ambitions. Supervisors are Jennifer Mack and Anders Bergström, assistant professors in Architecture at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. The GIANT Room made a post recently about the architecture class I lead in which we made Museums of Emotions :) Before we got started, we discussed the function of museums: what we interact with, what we like best, how information is displayed. A Museum of Emotions can display all emotions, even those we might want to hide. How can we create spaces that embody our feelings? Check out this post to walk through my students museums and see how they combined their creativity and sensitivity to create really great pieces.

Public art often misses the mark in urban spaces. Often one randomly encounters a piece of art that feels utterly out of place. This isn't just an isolated incident; it's a widespread issue in urban planning. The core of the problem? A glaring disconnect between the art, the space, and the community it resides in. Art in urban spaces often fails because it's designed in isolation. Architects and urban planners meticulously craft the fabric of our cities, yet when it comes to integrating public art, the process is frequently an afterthought. The result? Artworks that clash with their surroundings, failing to resonate with the public or enhance the urban landscape. Moreover, the essence of public art gets lost when it doesn't engage the community. True, impactful art stems from understanding the cultural, historical, and social context of its location. Without this connection, art becomes a mere object, not an experience. It's time to rethink our approach to public art and move towards a collaborative model where artists, architects, and the community co-create, ensuring that art enriches the urban experience, not detracts from it.
