Now Shannon Trust are working in partnership with Hertfordshire County Council and Hertfordshire Probation to support people on probation in Hertfordshire to improve their literacy skills. "We’re urgently looking to recruit volunteer reading coaches to support people to learn to read or improve their existing skills. If you live in the Hertfordshire area, and would like to transform lives through learning, or know someone who might, please tell them to visit our website, you can also find out more information about the project." For any questions contact: [email protected]; www.shannontrust.org.uk ********************* More details of their work: Shannon Trust transforms lives by helping more people experience the positive impact of learning. Each year, we help thousands to train and inspire people who can read to teach those who can't and build a different, more positive future for themselves and their families. Hundreds of letters they receive pull at the heart strings: 'able for first time to write to my wife'; 'read a whole book today'; 'it has opened my world.' "I am now more involved with my children, making me a better parent. My relationships with friends and family are now more intimate. I can express myself honestly as I don’t have to rely on others." "The difference before and after my Shannon Trust mentor helped me is more than words can say. Now my reading skills will help me to take the courses I want to do, and to go after my dream."

As a corporate member of The Tutors’ Association, I am so pleased to see John and others shining a light on the Tutoring industry. This broadcast raised some really useful and key points, and it makes me feel very proud to be a member. Since the pandemic, many people have set themselves up as tutors, and consequently, it has become really hard for parents to know where to look and who to trust. Keeping our students safe is our top priority. So, what do we do to keep your child safe? - Only use qualified teachers, and we check their certificates. - Tuition only happens in a student's home, online or in a school setting - never in a tutor's home. We also require someone over the age of 18 to be present for the duration of the lesson. - We require a minimum of 2 professional references. We also use a system that verifies the source of the reference to irradicate false references. - Enhanced DBS - Tutors DBS is currently checked every 6 months, and we are moving over to daily checking within the next month. We conduct prohibition checks to identify whether a teacher has had any sanctions against them while teaching. This would not show on a DBS check unless it was a police matter; however, it may be something that would make them unsuitable to work with a student. - We only use Tutors in the UK who have a secure and deep understanding of the UK curriculum. #tutoringservices #learning #Education https://lnkd.in/ec_4XWDA

As I gear up for another exciting event tomorrow in Birmingham—The Emergency Services Show —where I’ll have the chance to attend CPD-accredited seminars, I’m pleased to share that today I received the results of my first attempt at the National Investigators’ Exam (NIE) from the College of Policing , and I’m thrilled to have passed. 🎉 On just my second day after being swiftly assigned to the Domestic Abuse Detective team—following an intense eight-week period with the Patrol team, during which I completed almost 50% of my portfolio (ex-NVQ)—passing this exam on my first attempt is something I've been told to be proud of. Despite barely scraping through, I still believe it’s worth celebrating! That said, I want to be intellectually honest with myself. This result is, in my view, a combination of both fortune and my logical reasoning abilities, rather than an indicator of a dedicated study effort. For those unfamiliar with policing exams in the UK, they don’t merely test your knowledge but assess your ability to apply that knowledge to hypothetical scenarios. As a result, sometimes strong deductive skills can lead to the right answers, even if the theory isn’t fully understood. During my initial training, I maintained an average score above 90%, even achieving 98% on one exam, which may have given me the confidence to underestimate the volume of material needed for the NIE—leaving my preparation until the last 10 days. While I’m pleased to have passed, I’ve made a commitment to myself. Over the coming months, I’ll be undertaking a blended training course with an online provider, almost as if I were preparing for the exam again. This is because I understand just how crucial the topics I’ve only brushed upon will be in my role as a Detective, and I’m eager to build true competence in these areas. That said, despite being a bit hard on myself, I will definitely be celebrating this achievement—and if you'd like to send over a congratulatory message, feel free! 🕵🏻♂️ 😄 #NIE #NationalInvestigatorsExam #ContinuousDevelopment #CPD #DetectiveInTraining #BedfordshirePolice #LawEnforcementJourney #KeepLearning #ProfessionalGrowth Bedfordshire Police

Sadly this is true. And even sadder, we have heard it TOO many times. Remember, to get an EHC needs assessment you have to meet the threshold for the legal test which is... "If a local authority (LA) is requested to carry out an EHC needs assessment by a parent, young person, school or college, it must consider: (a) whether the child or young person has or may have special educational needs (SEN); and (b) whether they may need special educational provision to be made through an EHC plan." If you need our help here are some options... Join us to write your EHC needs assessment request in person in October, with help from our advocates.
