Then we'll start to see this public good really become something that's a launching pad for young people." Educator, Facilitator, and Trainer for Social Change. I help those dedicated to social and organizational change do their work effectively, sustainably, and authentically. jamesboutin.com
Have you found yourself struggling with how divisive social justice work can sometimes feel? Do you wish you had more capacity and skill to support relationship and community when things get difficult? Social Justice Stewardship: Relational Skills for Sustainable Change is a two-day in-person training that Network for EdWork, Martha Hurwitz, Emily Lee, and I are offering on June 20-21. Find a link to more information here: https://lnkd.in/gJhWQDYU Who Is This For? Folks actively working on social justice across various sectors (education, law, healthcare, food access, climate justice, etc...) who are passionate about supporting the work over the long-haul. Why Focus on Relational Skills? Social change is not easy. It takes time, commitment, and vision. But most importantly, social change requires community and partnership. None of us can implement a vision for social change on our own. Relationships within and between communities are the very foundation of long-term efforts. The larger the vision, the stronger the communities and relationships need to be. Because relationships are so crucial to the success of the work, the work risks falling apart when they are not supported. That’s why an essential task in any social justice effort is stewardship. What Does It Mean to Be a Steward of Social Justice? Stewards track and support not only the relationships between various individuals and communities. Stewards also track and support the larger community that those relationships exist within. Not everyone needs to be a steward. And even those who excel at it don’t need to do it all the time. But any social justice effort that lasts will ultimately come to rely on the quality of stewardship its members are able to offer. Stewards tend to relationships and community so that trauma and conflict will have less room to sow disconnection - the root of social injustice. When trauma and conflict do arise, as they naturally will, stewards work together to hold space toward healing, insight, and deeper connection. In doing so, they play a key role in actualizing social justice values. In short, social justice work relies on its stewards. If you are called to this kind of stewardship, and you’d like to deepen your skillset around it, this training might be a good fit for you. We are currently calling for applications for our latest ANROWS research grant. Our grants have supported many researchers working to better understand and respond to domestic, family and sexual violence. Including those whose work has been critical to the nation’s conversation about who experiences violence, like that of Professor of Social Work at the University of Melbourne, Cathy Humphreys. Her work highlighted the needs of children as victim-survivors. We asked Cathy to share her experience of receiving an ANROWS research grant. She told us that: "ANROWS grants provided crucial support for my ongoing research, enabling the development of a comprehensive framework, model, and resources for collaborating with practitioners and organisations to support their practice working with all family members where there is domestic and family violence. The grants laid the groundwork for a specialised focus in collaboration with David Mandel and the Safe & Together Institute. Adapting the S&T Institute's framework to address mother-blaming in the context of children living with domestic and family violence, we tailored it to the Australian context and extended our knowledge to the workforce, a unique contribution not widely seen in other countries.” “The foundational grants from ANROWS were instrumental in building expertise and conducting research in this critical area. Early career researchers gained valuable experience in action research and co-design through these initial projects. The collaboration with the Safe & Together Institute, initially funded by ANROWS, has been the 'sweet spot' in my research journey over the past nine years." Veteran Housing Corp reminds you that #HOMELESSNESS IS THE RESULT OF DECADES OF THE FAILURE TO BUILD AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR ALL. THE HISTORY AND PRESENT STATE OF THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IN AMERICA CAN BE SUMMED UP IN ONE WORD: BROKEN DON'T BE FOOLED BY SLICK PROMOTIONAL POSTS THAT MAKE IT SEEM LIKE YOUR LOCAL, STATE OR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICIALS ARE SOLVING THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING CRISIS. WHEN IT COMES TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING, THE PUBLIC AND TAXPAYERS MUST ASK: AT WHAT COST TO THE TAXPAYERS AND HOW LONG IS THE AFFORDABILITY PERIOD? EVERY TAXPAYER SHOULD BE ASKING THEIR ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICIALS THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: 1. How much local, state, and federal funding, tax credits, density bonus increase, waivers of impact fees, or other government benefit or incentive did the project receive? 2. What is the affordability period for each project and, if the affordability period is not in perpetuity or permanent, WHY NOT? 3. What guarantees exist that tenants in the affordable housing units will not be displaced after an "affordability period expires? Any LOCAL, STATE or FEDERAL official that does not MANDATE "permanent" affordability periods or affordability "IN PERPETUITY" for any project receiving some government benefit is commiting MALFEASANCE and should quit, be removed from office or be terminated. IN MOST CASES WHEN IT COMES TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING, the public and taxpayer are being fooled into thinking their elected and appointed officials are solving problems, when in fact, all hey have done is "KICK THE CAN DOWN THE ROAD" to burden a future generation with the same problem or crisis!

It is important to learn about social justice, education, and technology because it allows us to considerately engage with the world, advocate for change, and navigate through the challenges of society. In the future I plan on integrating these concepts into my teaching through the use of technology, collaborative projects, critical pedagogy, and inclusivity. #edlt3110_sp24_m71_r7

This #GivingTuesday, let's build bridges and foster understanding together! https://lnkd.in/dS5ZqgQ3 Our communities, whether local or global, are grappling with deep-rooted divisions, societal inequalities, and the repercussions of misunderstandings. In such a climate, fostering equitable, open, and empathetic dialogue is no longer merely an option; it has become an imperative. Media Fellowship House stands committed to promoting dialogue as a powerful tool for change. Our dedication to creating a more equitable community is stronger than ever. Through initiatives like our Conversation Series, we've witnessed the transformative impact of dialogue. It has the power to: Foster Understanding: Dialogue nurtures understanding by providing a platform for individuals to openly share their experiences, perspectives, and concerns. It creates a space where diverse voices are heard and valued. Bridge Divides: In a world often marked by political, social, and cultural divisions, dialogue acts as a bridge, connecting individuals who might otherwise remain isolated from one another. Promote Empathy: Engaging in open dialogue encourages empathy and compassion, enabling participants to see the world through the eyes of others and, in turn, work together to discover common ground. As you consider your year-end giving, please know your gift – of any size – will help us to do even more in the coming year to foster understanding and compassion through meaningful dialogue, provide scholarship opportunities for high school youth, and empower households through our housing counseling services. Together, let's create positive change and build a more equitable and empathetic community. #GivingTuesday #CommunityBuilding #EmpathyInAction
