Here's a glimpse into his impactful PhD journey and groundbreaking work: ‘We are looking into immune cell activation mysteries and autoimmune inflammation in kidneys, with a focus on drug development for treating autoimmune kidney disease. A potential game-changer in health care!’ But that's not all! ‘We are also exploring the genetic and molecular basis of kidney disease in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia, aiming to reduce the burden of kidney disease on the Tiwi Islands.’ 'My drive comes from personalised medicine. At ANU's Personalised Medicine and Autoimmunity Group, we pioneer individualised treatments, pushing the boundaries of translational medical science.’ Tom's 2023 was monumental! His PhD thesis came together, marking a transition from studying autoimmunity mechanisms to drug development. Plus, he played a key role in guiding new researchers in the lab. ‘Canberra offers a unique blend of clinical and research careers. For early career researchers, the John Curtin School of Medical Research is a goldmine of resources and brilliant minds. I recommend the challenge to anyone considering this fulfilling path!’ What's next? Tom is becoming a McCusker Postdoctoral Research Fellow at ANU, balancing research with clinical nephrology. Congratulations to Prof Emmanuel Favaloro, our Principal Hospital Scientist NSW Health Pathology Westmead ICPMR, who has been recognised twice in the 2024 Research Magazine as a top researcher in the fields of haematology and clinical laboratory science. The Australian's 2024 Research magazine names the top researcher and top research institution in each of 250 fields of research, based on the number of citations for papers published in the top 20 journals in each field over the past five years. Research has always played a large role throughout his remarkable career. His first research paper while based at Westmead was published in 1985. We asked him why investing in research is so important. "Good research contributes to our growing understanding of disease and by understanding disease, this enables us to provide better patient care and treatment," he said. His advice to others? "Always be curious and question what you think you know. That will develop new discoveries and innovation and improve the way we do things. The recently published review in Frontiers in Science highlights the need for multidisciplinary collaboration in medicine, particularly in transmissible illnesses, precision medicine, systems medicine, and data science. The COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped our understanding of diseases, emphasizing the complex interplay of physical traits, genetics, comorbid conditions, socioeconomic status, and environmental exposures. One of the key lessons from the pandemic is the importance of precision medicine, which tailors medical treatment to the individual characteristics of each patient. [FINALIST IN THE SPOTLIGHT] Lorenz Balcar, MD, is a doctor and researcher based in Vienna, Austria. He enrolled in the physician scientist PhD at the Medical University of Vienna and is currently doing his clinical rotations and research. His recent research focuses on patients with advanced liver cirrhosis. For those at high risk of severe bleeding from swollen veins, a specific treatment called transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) can improve outcomes. However, even patients at lower risk may face complications despite using standard treatments. New Scholar: Dr. Nathan Blue! Dr. Blue is a Maternal-Fetal Medicine clinician scientist at the University of Utah with a body of work on optimizing the clinical diagnosis of fetal growth restriction (FGR) and the prediction of perinatal morbidity. Unfortunately, available approaches to understand and refine the prognosis in FGR remain crude and imprecise, such that many patients unnecessarily undergo intensive monitoring and early delivery, while preventable stillbirths continue unabated in the U.S.. My goals are twofold: 1) to better understand the role of genetics in contributing to FGR and perinatal morbidity; 2) to leverage novel computational approaches, including AI, to integrate genomic and clinical data to refine risk estimation in FGR and other obstetric scenarios characterized by prognostic uncertainty.
