Every now and again you attend an event that reminds you of why you do what you do and what architecture is supposed to be about. For me this is sharing stories and connecting people who want to make change, and spaces that can facilitate a difference. HomeGrown Plus's recent panel event 'SUSTAINABILITY: The impact on the Global South, is this the elephant in the room?' organised by Neil Pinder, was one of these conversations, where the panel challenged one another and the audience pushed for accountability. The discussion centred around what the term 'sustainability' means today; the difference between 'experiencing' and 'understanding'; the exploitation of resources and the drastic implications of these, and the positioning of the Global South and Global North. Speaker panel was made up of: - Neal Shasore, Head of School at The London School of Architecture - Noris Obijiaku, Part I Architectural Assistant and Digital Content Creator - Dr. Harriet Harriss, Educator, Writer and Architect - Chrissa Stamatopoulou, Architect at Grimshaw - Katie Fisher, Architect at CARD Projects - Chris Williamson, RIBA Elect and Founding Partner at Weston Williamson + Partners Host - Jasmin Yeo, Project Assistant at Jan Kattein Architects Summary: Be human before you think about being a 'professional'. And, as one closing question by Architecture Student Stella F. reminded everyone, in a backdrop of negative impact and challenges around the world, ask yourself what is 'the joy' that drives you in your own mission to better the built environment.

Hello LinkedIn architects community In today's cities, buildings often seem more controlled by money than by creative ideas. As Rem Koolhaas observes in "Junkspace," where "the almost perfect correlation between new spaces and commerce is conceived as a victory," the constant circulation of money dominates. In this landscape, economic needs can overshadow innovative and experimental architecture. How can architects win back control? Thoughts?

Given our finite resources, future Architects will need to think about improving the existing, before creating something new. Let's reimagine architectural education to prioritise sustainability, repair, and care for our built environment.
