5 Steps to Entering an International Market
This morning I was reading an old article about Swiss products and came across to my mind a Swiss sunglasses brand that has representation in Peru.
That reminded me that a few years ago, when I was working for the Swiss Chamber of Commerce in Peru, there was a Swiss eyewear company that wanted to enter the Peruvian market.
Cerjo is a sunglasses company that wanted to expand globally and distribute its products in Peru.
At that time, I took on that project and I want to tell you briefly how I managed to get them to have potential business partners and be able to enter Peru.
Research the product. Cerjo wanted to distribute its sunglasses with a more modern and sporty style. But without beating around the bush, the product was sunglasses.
Identify the HS code of the product and complementary products. At this point it is important to know the HS code of the product to know the size of the market, prices of similar products in Peru and its importers. But it's also important to know about complementary products. In this case, other products offer the places where sunglasses are sold.
Select importers. After getting a list of the products, the next step is to select the active importers of those products. Their names and contact information.
Qualify importers. This is where we take a closer look at each of the importers, what other brands they work with, and import records.
Contact and negotiation. This part is essential to sell the offer, products and Cerjo's intention to look for a representative in Peru. Here comes continuous communication to get to connect with potential and future business partners.
This 5-step process is easy when you have valuable information that leads you on the right path.
In my case, I used Customs data and I believe that it is one of the most valuable sources of information that exists for exporters, importers, brokers, traders or companies looking for representations, even franchises in other countries.
