The Go Cycle Glasgow Fund, created by Glasgow Life to support the city’s cycling activation programme and engage local communities with the inaugural 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships, delivered significant, wide-ranging benefits according to an independent evaluation published today. Conducted by Glasgow Centre for Population Health the Go Cycle Glasgow Fund Evaluation highlights positive impacts across five key priority areas, including, accessibility, reducing barriers to participation, engaging under-represented groups in the city, and sustainability. Community groups could apply for up to £10,000 to create accessible and sustainable cycling projects, to inspire more local people to take up or return to cycling. Priority was given to groups working with young people, women, people with disabilities, low-income families, and minority ethnic groups, making it possible for more people, regardless of background or ability, to enjoy the benefits and power of the bike. It would be interesting to see what type of statistics on the following for Australia major cities would be like. Is it faster to travel on to wheels on the congested city roads? Do people agree more should be done to encourage cycling in cities? Do people feel comfortable teaching their children to cycle on the roads? Is high levels of traffic and lack of cycling infrastructure making it unsafe? I think you would positive results on all those questions for Australian cities. Time to put pressure on your local council and state representatives to take action.

Initial research by Cycling Citizens MK suggests only 23% of cycle journeys in Milton Keynes are by women.  Volunteer researchers simply counted cyclists using redways in the last 10 days of January and found 131 male and 32 female. Recent UK-wide research by Lime shows only 19% of female cyclists feel sale riding alone at night and 91% face barriers to cycling.  “It’s a justice issue,” says Jane Whild of Voices of Women in MK. “Women’s equal access to cycling must be designed into City plans.  To make progress, we must understand the barriers.” In partnership with Milton Keynes City Council, Jane has created a 3-minute online survey to do this, https://lnkd.in/eWST2cZG, and wants at least 1,000 MK residents, female and male, to complete it.
