In this research by the Florida Atlantic University & funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Team imaged the internal architecture of each vertebra of the thresher shark and the mineral structures found in the calcified cartilage by using Bruker micro-CT instruments. The aim was to understand the mechanisms behind the thresher sharks' vertebrae that allow its machete-like tail to be used to slap and stun prey, allowing it to swallow multiple fish in one fell swoop.
