This February, we're choosing to honor our heroes and ruminate on the lessons they taught us all. At Sky Corral Ranch this Presidents Day, we're feeling inspired by two of the greats, John F. Kennedy and George W. Bush. Two shining examples of what it means to be a fearless leader, they inspired our nation to believe in something greater than themselves, and taught us to be brave in the face of uncertainty. As Americans in today's world, our lives are filled with things we can choose to fear. But, there's always another choice. The choice to band together with our fellow Americans and take on the challenges ahead with courage is ours for the taking. For, truly, "There is nothing to fear, but fear itself." With all the polarity in our current political landscape, we'd like to be clear. This is NOT about Republicans. This is NOT about Democrats. This post is about leadership. Being an effective leader is NOT about you. It's NOT about asking what your team can do for you, but what you can do for your team. Sound familiar? It's about others. It's about building a united team where every member feels seen, heard, and appreciated. That's what helps them believe in the vision. As a leader, you have the influence to make that happen.  As for JFK and George W, it's hard to boil down their lasting legacies with just one quote from each of these great presidents, but these are the words we'd like to leave you to contemplate today. How do you transfer Status, Authority and Power when your 'term' is up? The recent voluntary transfer of power to King Frederick X after Queen Margrethe II having more than five decades on the throne has got me reflecting on this question and how we apply this in organisations. We all have an expiry date in the position we currently fulfil. According to Equilar Inc, the median term of a CEO on the S&P 500 has dropped by 20% to 4.8 years over the last 10 years. The amount of changes at middle and senior manager are even more regular as organizations transform and adapt to new market conditions. For those that have held the reins for a long time, retiring or perhaps even through active succession planning, how do you manage this transfer of power? Letting go of long-held privileged status is incredibly difficult to absorb by the human mind. Are you able to manage this change in status while setting your replacement up for success? Breaking: Gareth Southgate Resigns. Probably best for all concerned, but here's why I think plenty of great managers / leaders get unfair criticism 🗣 Much of the good work of a great leader or manager goes unnoticed (in football and in business). It happens behind the scenes. On the other hand: - Winning - Trophies - Tactics These are all highly visible. And so the criticism that Gareth has received on all those points has been (often times) valid. But there are many things he's improved beyond recognition. Problem is, those things are mostly invisible & intangible. Or at least, less visible, because they happen away from the public eye. - Resilience - Team spirit - Psychological safety - Authentic servant leadership - Preparation & professionalism - Improved PR & relations with the media & fans - Completely changing the FA organisational culture - Genuine camaraderie & dare I say it love between players & staff - Turned what was previously our biggest weakness into arguably our greatest strength (penalty shootouts) Perhaps most importantly, he has earned the love, respect and admiration of his players. Because he was always there to protect them when they needed it most. Ultimately, he's left the organisation in a far better place than he found it. Which is more than we could have hoped for back in the dark days of 2016. True, he couldn't quite take this team over the line. But, nobody before him ever got this close consistently.
