Fathom “finds some evidence that governments with large majorities, which is what election polls suggest, deliver stronger growth. That was the case after the 1997 Labour landslide, when, admittedly in a friendlier global environment, the UK economy averaged 3.1% growth for ten years. The UK economy saw a modest rebound in November, although not by enough to rule out the prospect of a technical recession for the second half of 2023. The figures mean the UK would require a flat December to avoid a contraction for the full quarter, and that month was held back by wet weather and strikes by doctors. It leaves the economy sputtering with a chance for a small pickup later this year. UK Economy Maintains Solid Recovery With Services Aiding Growth * GDP rose 0.6% in the second quarter after an 0.7% gain in the first three months of the year, according to the Office for National Statistics data (ONS). * The figure was in line with economists’ expectations and reflected strength in government spending and the services sector. * The ONS data show growth in the services sector in the second quarter of the year, with 11 of the 14 subsectors increasing output. * The professional, scientific and technical activities portion was the strongest area, with scientific research and development the standout with 11% growth, the best since the first quarter of 2020. * Legal activities, architecture and engineering were also strong. That was offset slightly by a small decline for consumer-facing services, including in the real estate market, retail more broadly and in car and motorcycle repairs. The UK economy: Bright but fragile. Cost pressures are easing, paving the way for economic recovery. That’s the headline from our Q2 Economic Outlook by economist Thomas Pugh A deeper look: The economy has turned a corner, presenting the brightest outlook since the pandemic began, however, the rapid growth seen in Q1 is unlikely to be sustained throughout the year. Inflation is expected to slow over the next few quarters, staying close to the Bank of England’s 2% target, this paves the way for potential interest rate cuts starting in August. This graph from the Resolution Foundation tells you almost everything you need to know about the UK economy. We are now officially in recession, but let's be honest, things have been bad for a lot longer than that. As Torsten Bell pointed out elsewhere, GDP per capita (the genuinely useful GDP measure) contracted in every single quarter of 2023, and by 0.7% overall. The UK has been sliding down the GDP per capita league table for a while now, falling behind the likes of Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, Sweden, Germany, Australia and Malta, in the process. When I was last in Australia you could sense the relative change - it felt like a richer place than the UK. Our current economic model looks great if you are already wealthy, or a rent-seeker on your way to financial security, but it's not so great if you are not. Let's hope the General Election campaign will see some genuine ideas for driving productivity growth and skills development alongside an actual plan for quickly accelerating housing supply.
