The National Day for Truth & Reconciliation on September 30th is more than wearing an orange shirt. It honors the 150,000+ First Nations people affected by Canada's residential school system, active from the 1830s to the 1990s.
Between 2008-2015, The Truth & Reconciliation Commission aimed to reveal the realities of these schools through survivor testimonies and outline a path for healing (truth) and addressing generational trauma (reconciliation). Their report includes 94 calls to action to build respectful relationships and improve the future for all Canadians. You can review these calls here - https://ow.ly/wFkK50Ts91f
One relevant action for commercial real estate is:
92. We call upon the corporate sector to adopt the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP - https://ow.ly/EK2s50Ts94y) as a framework, ensuring meaningful consultation, equitable access to opportunities for Indigenous peoples, and education on their history, including residential schools and UNDRIP.
This task is significant but achievable. Here’s how you can contribute:
1️⃣ Educate yourself and your teams about Truth & Reconciliation Day using accessible resources. Don't rely solely on Indigenous individuals to lead this effort.
2️⃣ Train your teams in intercultural competency, conflict resolution, human rights, and anti-racism. Address racism actively, especially in areas with high Indigenous populations.
3️⃣Engage Indigenous consultants for land acknowledgements, training, and event participation.
4️⃣ Purchase orange shirts from Indigenous-led initiatives to support authentic causes and avoid cultural appropriation.
5️⃣ Support programs like Creating Career Pathways in Commercial Real Estate (https://ow.ly/2mSE50Ts94x) to enhance Indigenous inclusion in the industry, lead by Oteenow Employment and Training, Tribal Chiefs Employment and Training Services Association (TCETSA) and BOMA Edmonton.
Together, we can drive meaningful change and contribute to reconciliation.
